I run fluxbox-devel. After reading through some of the older threads it looks like sylpheed-claws is most highly recommeneded, but thunderbird was catching on.
I might run XFCE4 in the future, but hadn't been planning on running GNOME or KDE. So I guess that would preclude the Gnome/KDE packages like Balsa and Kmail?
It looks like my choices are:
sylpheed (somebody said it did have mail sorting)
sylpheed-claws (unstable? somebody said a lib changed killed it once)
thunderbird (unstable?)
evolution (bloated)
opera (i dont want to pay though)
ping (not a GUI)
mutt (not a GUI)
balsa (gnome-based)
kmail (kde-based)
It would be nice if there was also a windows version, but not required. I'm planning on just pulling emails off my ISPs pop server.
any suggestions or favorite? I'm sure people will disagree with my above denigrations, please enlighten me, the above is just what I had read earlier.
thx!

I use thunderbird and have absolutely no complaints.
Scratch that, one complaint. If thunderbird is open, firefox won't open. But if firefox is open already, thunderbird opens just fine.

I also use Fluxbox, and have never had a problem with Thunderbird.
