KDE Plasma 6.0.4
Xorg 21.1.13
sddm 0.21
nvidia proprietary driver 470.239.06-1
Sometimes after I login via sddm, just as everything looks fine ( I can see the wallpaper, KDE panels e.t.c.), the screen would suddenly go black, then goes off and on with an interval of ~10s.
I can't switch to other ttys, so I can only reboot.
Logs shows that exactly 60 seconds after Xorg start up, various KDE components would complain "X connection broke" or "X11 connection broke", while X11 seems to be still running, with some strange events of device removal.
Take today as an example, here's the Xorg log and journals.
Xorg starts up, log shows that it's "May 9 01:15:33":

Oh yes, I forgot to paste configs. Post edited.
grep finds nothing. And in the Xorg log file, from 157 sec to 159 sec, you can see where those fds are from.
For example:
[ 159.746] (II) systemd-logind: got fd for /dev/input/event3 13:67 fd 40 paused 0

nvm, they're autogenerated by libinput.
Please post your complete system journal for the boot, eg.
sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
for the previous one ("-1")
Process termination might just be a response to REISUB
the screen would suddenly go black, then goes off and on with an interval of ~10s.
I can't switch to other ttys, so I can only reboot.
Can you ssh into the system?

Found no konfig files under .local/share/kscreen/
How did you know the problem might relate to kscreen?
About ssh, I will try next time this problem shows up, like after a reboot later today.

I just checked the journal, about 60s after the login kscreen gets active and it's on the record.
If it's not trying to apply a bogus config, it might respond to a DPMS event (ie. the monitor goes to sleep, unregisters and kscreen tries to remove it)
You can probably disable the daemon in "kcmshell6 kded"?

Alright, perhaps I will try that.
By the way, I noticed that when I login, there would be a line in the journal:
sddm[641]: Session started true
But on failed logins caused by the problem in discussion, the line would be:
sddm[641]: Session started false
And 60 sec afterward the problem occurs.
I have checked journals of different boots, and they are all the same:
"started false", 60 sec later here comes the problem
"started true", then we cool.

What's more, the sddm "Session started false" shows up 30 sec after I login.
So it seems what's to be happening:

May 09 01:50:46 pootos sddm[643]: Session started true

Despite running KDE there's some Gnome stuff in the Journal and esp. GOA - you might be hitting https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=292959&p=3
Offline
Not helping. Removed GOA, confirmed no gnome activity from journalctl, problem still persists.
I have a feeping it's a sddm bug, perhaps file an issue to sddm?
I will try rebooting to reproduce the prob again, then ssh into it.
What should I do after ssh?

You login (10s later the SDDM greeter session closes) and then nothing happens for 30s until you hit the bad session status, ~15s later kwin starts, complains about some null-size rect, 60s after the login kscreen (finally) tries to adjust your output, there's a warning because plasma wanted to create a null-sized font and 90s after the login the session closes.
90s is the systemd timeout and kde meanwhile starts most stuff as user services.
Can you reliably login
- to an openbox session?
- with a new user account (into KDE)?

Do you have a journal of a good login for comparism?
Yes, I can just keep rebooting until I have a good login, this problem is not a 100% chance event, and I'm replying you with my KDE session running rn. The chance is still every high though, sometimes I have to reboot for several times in a row to have a good login.

I compared 3 logins, one failed, two succeeded, 3 of them all have the warnings you mentioned: (0, 0, 0, 0) rect, "Point size <= 0".

As I can login successfully (by keep trying), these are not necessary I assume?

The idea was to post such journal - even if it's not the weird sizes, there's probably /some/ difference.
The final two test would be to see whether it's specific to
a) KDE
b) your UID (ie probably your ~/.config)

Thanks for the help so far!
So I tried:
a) OpenBox session with my usual account
b) KDE session with new account
c) OpenBox session with new account
Problem still persists in all 3 situations.

I also tried ly, rebooted several times, the problem didn't show up. I will try to make a successful boot later and paste the journal.

So the failure is in response to some timeout.
There isn't all that much to suggest (to good login has "pam_kwallet5: pam_sm_open_session" somewhat earlier) it but try to disable pam_kwallet5

I tried to disable pam_kwallet5 in a...more radical way, renaming /usr/lib/security/pam_kwallet5.so that is, because I can't disable the service (plasma-kwallet-pam.service) as the service file doesn't contain "[Install]" section, and can't uninstall it because kwallet-pam is required by other packages.
But, nooope. Even if I renamed the shared object, the problem still occurs. I have checked the journal, no "pam_kwallet5" messages, only a systemd message of plasma-kwallet-pam.service: "Started Unlock kwallet from pam credentials." 10 sec after "Session started false", and some drkonqi error messages minutes later.

The idea was to skip it in /etc/pam.d/sddm, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE_Wa … figure_PAM

I actually saw this one yesterday (yeah I forgot to tell you that) https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE_Wa … le_KWallet, tried and didn't work neither.
I also tried comment the line out in sddm config. Result is the same as renaming the .so file.
I do think it's related to sddm, as ly works fine. Should I file an issue on sddm GitHub repo?

I'd first try sth. like lightdm since esp. ly isn't integrated w/ logind all that well - but b/c of https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p2170582 it's either a problem with SDDM or the session bus (and the latter should™ result in more deterministic failure)

I did some more troubleshooting by reading and editting sddm's code to add some more debug messages, also compiling it to see its effect.
Now it's very strange.
In short, when I login, UserSession class will start sddm-helper-start-x11user, but after 30 sec, which is QT's default timeout, it was still in "Starting" state instead of "Running" state. So UserSession determined it failed to start, thus generating the "Session started false" message. AND, just right after the 30 sec timeout and "Session started false" message, sddm-helper-start-x11user finally came to live, but it's already too late.
I will file an issue to sddm and see what they think about this, though perhaps it might not be sddm's problem in the end.

Anything fancy in your $SHELL rc/profile that might impede the startup?
(Though since it affects a new user, you're more looking at the global RCs /etc/profile.d/* etc)
What if you comment https://github.com/sddm/sddm/blob/ae072 … er.cpp#L66 ?
