Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer issue

Re: blue screen - lol yep exactly like windows the printer crashed with a blue screen on the little LCD with an error code. I didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture of it. I had to power cycle the printer to reset.

So in Gnome and Cinnamon there is a printer package called system-config-printer  (https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … g-printer/) which has an applet for the menu bar and an app to control the printer. It also provides a visual interface for the print queue. Not exactly sure how to embed a picture into the a forum post otherwise I'd happily show you.

nmap produces the one IP address the printer is using.

Back to CUPS. Lets see if I get this right.

1. Ignoring the system-config-printer GUI I will configure the printer via the CUPS web interface
2. I go to http://localhost:631/admin/ add printer, ignore the one it has under Discovered Network Printers - which correctly IDs as the HP (but selecting only gives you the direct socket option which has the shift right issue)
3. I choose the IPP option and put in the URI ipp://<printer-ip>/ipp/print  with my printer's IP...add in some names
4. I then choose "Make" as generic and select IPP Everywhere (there's two btw "IPP Everywhere (TM)" and "Generic IPP Everywhere printer (en)" . For now I select the first.
5 And then I hit add printer and pretty much instantly system-config-printer automatically registers this in the GUI.
6. I do the test print (via the GUI and also Librewriter) and.....

bingo!!! it works. SOLVED!!!!!

I guess what remains is the "why" - for the benefit of those who might follow us on this -  I am assuming the culprit here is https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … g-printer/ as well as the HP direct sockets support.

Configuring the IPP URI directly from the system-config-printer does not work
Configuring the network discovered path via CUPS (direct sockets) does not work.
Packages hplip and hplip-plugin do not work - at least with this printer.

Oddly I am 100% certain all I did earlier this year was to us hplip and system-config-printer. I've no idea what has changed.

The correct path (probably true for most printers I'm thinking) is do all the config via CUPS web interface and let the GUI look after itself. The CUPS-PDF driver might also work but will need to test.

I am going to mark this solved thanks to both of you fine individuals. And @millus, I hope the other linux issues abate for you, but for what its worth, your pain is probably helping a lot of other folk. @seth thanks you legend.

Heaps of gratitude

Assuming there's no regression in hplip (b/c of the unsuccessful downgrade) hplip might have fallen incompatible w/ some cups update.

The CUPS-PDF driver might also work but will need to test.

It will generically allow you to print into pdf files.

Configuring the network discovered path via CUPS (direct sockets) does not work.

This will require mdns resolution through avahi specifically and esp. not the mdns responder built into systemd-resolved.
