Macbook keyboard(s) unresponsive after unlock and/or uplug

I have been having chronic issues where my keyboard(s) is/are unresponsive after unlocking (using i3lock) or unplugging the USB keyboard. Strangely this has been quite variable, sometimes affecting both internal keyboard and USB, and sometimes also affecting the track-pad. Under are the journal entries before I have to hard reboot with the power button.
