On my desktop machine when doing C-a-Esc screen will say entering copy mode as well as other useful status info to say what has just happened and such. Without it I am often left guessing as to what mode I am in or whether something was copied to clipboard or not.
Desktop displays this information yet on a recent install on a laptop screen will not show any information on the bottom bar.
I found a post on stackexchange about status bar set to always be on. I thought this sounded like what I was after but it wasn't. The code is
caption always
in
.screenrc
but that just gives a bar at the bottom telling the screen name. Not what I am after. I am rather wanting to get data on modes and actions which show for a few seconds on the bottom as a bar, but NOT, the status bar apparently, after doing those actions.
I want copy mode status shown like how it used to be on most other machines I have installed screen on. Not sure what changed. I imagine it is just some thing else I have to set in the rc file but not sure what.
All other pertinent stuff is the same that I can think of such as xterm and ratpoison dm.

Not sure how you want to setup screen's menu bar, but an easy solution would be to just copy the config files (".screenrc" or "/etc/screenrc") from your desktop to your current machine.
