Hello,
I'm attempting to install Arch Linux on a brand-new N100-powered mini PC, but am running into disk-related issues. Initially I dd'd the latest (2024.06.01) ISO to a thumb drive and tried to boot from it. This image failed to boot, with I/O errors on my SSD (ata2.00: failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED), which based on other topics on the forum indicates a disk failure.
However, earlier I successfully installed Proxmox on the same SSD and smartctl does not report any issues, so I tried again with the 2024.05.01 ISO. This ISO booted without any disk-related errors and I was able to install and configure Arch Linux without issue while being chrooted into the installation. But when I reboot in order to boot from the SSD and unlock my LUKS root partition, I'm getting similar I/O related errors. I made two installation attempts, one with the btrfs filesystem with subvolumes and a second with just a basic ext4 file system. In both cases, I'm able to unlock my LUKS partition (but only with a systemd initramfs), but not able to reach the login prompt or to login. I also don't think it's user error made while setting up the LUKS partition, since while booting from the 2024.06.01 ISO I never even reach the command line due to the I/O errors mentioned above. The same errors popped up while booting from the latest ISO even after I wiped the GPT of the disk using gdisk from a live ISO (neon) to start fresh.
When I boot from 2024.05.01 ISO again, I have no issues unlocking the LUKS partition or chrooting into my system on disk. Therefore it looks like it's a driver, kernel, or package issue instead, as pacstrap would fetch the latest of these while installing Arch Linux, rather than the packages available on the 2024.05.01 ISO.
So, onto my main question: how do you suggest I debug this properly if I'm adament on installing Arch Linux on this device?

There's been an uptick of these issues, because SATA power management was enabled by default for more drives, try setting the problematic drives to "max performance" or "medium_power": https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … Management

For anyone else running into this issue:
Create a new udev rule.
/etc/udev/rules.d/hd_power_save.rules
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="scsi_host", KERNEL=="host*", ATTR{link_power_management_policy}="max_performance"
Add the newly created file to your initramfs.
/etc/mkinitcpio.conf
FILES=(/etc/udev/rules.d/hd_power_save.rules)
Then run:
mkinitcpio -P
