Some fonts can't be printed

So far I have only found the font "Cantarell" to be faulty. Whenever I want to print (to PDF or send to printer directly) the font glyphs become empty. There is no shape; when you select it, the selection rectangle is a thin line. However, if I use Cantarell in LibreOffice or set it for Geany, it works just fine. It is as if the printing driver has some problems with it.

Does anyone have anything to suggest, please? Any advice on how to diagnose this?

Also, for now I don't have a proper understanding of how fonts work, I don't know how they are stored in the system nor how programs use them. I have tried reading about it but could not succeed. Any hints about this will be helpful.

Cantarell is so beautiful.

EDIT: If it is the format (ttf/otf), note that Nimbus fonts also are otf but they work fine. Software "fontforge" also doesn't open Cantarell, but opens Nimbus. Font file (Cantarell-VF.otf) is found on Cantarell website https://cantarell.gnome.org/ where they mention how this font is "varaible" (whatever it means).
