Tearing-like artifacts with HDMI output, NVIDIA RTX A1000

Hi.
I'm using Arch on a Dell Precision 7680. This laptop has an NVIDIA GPU that's used for driving the HDMI output which I need to occasionally use. The GPU in question is an RTX A1000 with a GA107GLM chip. The monitor is a Dell U2515H. The laptop lid is down and the laptop screen is completely disabled. Desktop environment is Xfce with Xfwm as the window manager.

The problem is that there are frequent artifacts, mostly tearing-like, which are the most visible when switching virtual desktops when there's a black-to-white transition. I recorded the screen (with my phone, trying to record with any X11 grabbers doesn't show this) while switching desktops and here's an example frame of this :

The actual artifacts are on the screen only for a fraction of a second but still long enough to be visible.

What I've tried :

  • Switching from the nouveau to nvidia driver.

  • Turning on the laptop screen while the HDMI one is attached.

  • Switching PRIME Synchronization on and off

  • Toying with nvidia_drm.modeset=1

  • Running live Kubuntu 24.04 (which has nouveau) in case what I'm seeing is somehow caused by xfwm. Nope.

I'm out of ideas at this point. xrandr --verbose : https://0x0.st/XA1u.txt , Xorg.0.log : https://0x0.st/XA12.txt

None of this happens when just using the laptop screen or a monitor connected via USB-C.

I had this kind of tearing for years now, until yesterday I found out about the new nvidia driver (beta 555) fixing it. And it does fix it for me.
Please try to install the beta 555 driver from the AUR.

Thanks, it seems to have helped indeed. I wasn't able to see any artifacts when doing the same black-to-white transition test pictured in my original post. It's definitely not 100% gone though as I was able to notice some "blocks" when moving the cursor up and down in a TUI application like mc or ncmpc.

However, it happens a lot less often than before which means it's not nearly as noticeable in normal usage.
