My ancient HL2220 printer finally got to where it wouldn't grab the paper usually, so I just today got the HL-L2405w.
But in the CUPS (631) page, that's not one of the options.
It's brand new. Is it too new? Anybody know how to make progress?
It's seen as HL-L2405w, but in the Add Printer page where it asks for Model, the HL-L2405w is not in the list.

It seems like this printer supports airprint which usually means it doesn't require a driver .
Is it connected to your system through Wifi ?
Often driverless printers like this need to be discovered through avahi .
Is avahi installed and configured ?
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Thanks. The printer is discovered right away. But going through the cups (web interface), and after having run brlaser (not sure that's important), The first odd thing is when you get to "Connection", that field is just garbled characters/glyphs. Getting past that, selecting Brother as make, I get dozens of options for model. Just not my model. IIRC closest sounding model was HL-L2305w.
Haven't tried wifi yet and really hadn't planned to. I suppose it would be good though. Free up another USB port on my hub.
I've never looked into avahi. But my HL-2220 (this new printer looks almost the same, only black) was always working until recent mechanical troubles with pulling the paper.
So, given this info, does it sound like I still need to explore avahi??

You want to look into avahi if you opt for airprint over the (W)LAN so that it can discover the printer, it might even be the case it would advertise itself relevantly via the usb, but I'd say that's probably less common.

Thanks, looks like I've got things working again.
Edit: I think I was incorrect with my driver name in my earlier comment here, as I'm working with a lot of printer things new to me.
This is the driver I'm using now: Brother HL-L2405W, driverless, 2.0.0 (grayscale)
And I'm using Avahi.
This is working for me.
