I am struggling getting steam to launch games and have spent the last few days googling, reading the wiki and trying to solve it myself.
Steam installed and runs fine with no issues after following the arch wiki. I have installed 3 native games which are CS2 (using Steam Linux Runtime (Sniper 3.0), Unturned and Cities Skylines. I have also installed the Proton using game of AOE2:DE.
All games installed fine, files validate fine. When I run steam in urxvt, then launch any game, there are no errors reported. The play button goes from play, to cancel (launching), stop then play within a few seconds.
I have disabled the Steam game overlay.

Maybe also post the proton log you get, edit the properties and on the launch command option add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% then check your $HOME for a logfile of proton withe the appid of the game.

Re the proton log, I'm not sure how to edit the properties? Also do you mean to run
PROTON_LOG=1 steam

No, you go to the game page in your library and there should be a gear icon or right click the game in the library overview and open Properties, there you should be able to set launch options per game, and there you should be able to add it (as I've written it, the %command% will get replaced with whatever the game's launch command ends up being). PROTON_LOG=1 on steam itself should technically work as well, but would do it for everything you're launching.
but this shouldn't be relevant for native games... Can you post the output you get from just launching steam in a terminal and then trying a game?

For completeness, I added PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the launch command for AOE2:DE, and after launching the game, there was no log file in my $HOME directory.

You should make sure that a en_US.UTF-8 locale is generated, generally follow the preconditions in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam and maybe install steam-native-runtime, it will pull in a lot of potentially necessary baseline libs. which graphical environment are you trying this in and how are you starting it?

If you're running Openbox are you starting that with startx? Make sure your xinitrc contains the necessary includes to properly setup your user and dbus session: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xinit#xinitrc -- maybe also test a different WM, though afaik Oepnbox should generally be pretty painless.

yeah, startx. I am pretty certain its starting correctly. I have also installed gnome to test and i am getting the exact same issue.

just tried kde-desktop and exact same problem

So as an update, I have managed to get a couple of native games running including Unturned and Cities: Skylines. CS2 still has no error messages and just closes.
More testing, I have also got 2 windows games to run, but i cant get anything newer than Proton V5 to work. All newer version exhibit the same behavior of of CS2 native, in that the play button changes to launching then back to play, with no logs or error messages.

so I completely uninstalled and then removed all the files for cs2 and reinstalled. Now I have a cs2.sh file. Running it in terminal give

there should only one steam installed as multiple different versions can cause issue
I would recommend first remove both and then reinstalk the runtime variant multilib/steam - as cs2 seem to complain about requiring it
also: between remove and reinstall clear ~/.Steam - there could be residual files not cleaned uo by pacman

steam-native-runtime pulls down the steam package as a dependency.
I have uninstalled both, removed ~/.steam and any other files I could find relating to steam.
Have now reinstalled steam, CS2, processed the vulkan shaders, set CS2 to run with Sniper.
Finally the game loads, but no audio. Getting there. Thanks so far

fixed the audio in CS2 with
sudo pacman -S wireplumber pipewire-audio pipewire-pulse
systemctl --user --now enable wireplumber.service
systemctl --user --now start wireplumber.service
then added -sdlaudiodriver pipewire to launch commands
Now just Proton >v6 to fix

ok, just tried aoe2:de with proton 9 and all seems to be working. appreciate all the help
