Blank screen when waking from S3 sleep, disconnecting speakers fixes

Hi,

I have a PC running 6.9.7-arch1-1 on a Ryzen 7700X CPU and 32GB RAM. Root is on an NVMe SSD. I am running Gnome with an NVIDIA RTX 3070 with NVIDIA proprietary drivers. I am running X11.

% lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA104 [GeForce RTX 3070] (rev a1)
Subsystem: NVIDIA Corporation GA104 [GeForce RTX 3070]
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia
--
10:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Raphael (rev c3)
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device d000
	Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
% echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
x11

I recently installed a few new hardware accessories: a new LUKS encrypted non-root HDD, a webcam, and a new pair of speakers that connect via USB. Around the time I installed these I started having issues resuming my system from suspend (S3). As you can see, my system is configured to use deep/S3 sleep:

% cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
s2idle [deep]

I was able to narrow down the issue to my Creative Pebble V3 speakers. When I turn off the speakers before suspending I am able to wake my system just fine. Otherwise I get the blank screen. The magic SysRq keys have no effect and I have to restart my PC using the power button.

I am not sure how to go about debugging this issue. Here is a journalctl output that might help:

Re: Blank screen when waking from S3 sleep, disconnecting speakers fixes

I don't believe that is relevant anymore, since the issue you are referring to has been fixed in the 550 driver: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … -/issues/9.

Re: Blank screen when waking from S3 sleep, disconnecting speakers fixes

And I believe you posted the original problem 4 days ago w/o any reference to the driver version…

Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

as well as the output of "lsusb -tv" w/ the speakers attached.
The sure register w/ some corrupt data.

Jul 01 01:10:18 beluga kernel: usb 3-1: SerialNumber: ㉕捤稰眷㕳愳㤷湲

Wrt the sysrq, nb. that you've to explicitly enable it first, but the speaker might trash the entire bus, blocking your input.
You could try to ssh into the system and as last resort schedule a reboot (unless a *short* push of the power button triggers a reboot)

Re: Blank screen when waking from S3 sleep, disconnecting speakers fixes

Thanks for your prompt responses. Here is the system journal that you requested: http://0x0.st/XBbY.txt

It includes logs starting from shortly before I tell GNOME to suspend my system. Around a minute later, at about timestamp 19:05:29, I press a keyboard key to attempt to resume my system.

Based on your suggestion, I tried SSHing into my system when the system was in a black screen state. That worked and I was able to reboot my system remotely.

Here is the output of lsusb you requested:

% lsusb -tv

Sysrq should be enabled on my system, and I have used it before. As you said, perhaps there is some issue with the input bus.

% cat /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq

Thanks again for your help!
