Trying to find cause of lag in Certain Steam Games

First Post on the forum, so i hope i put it in the right place.
I followed the setup in the Arch Wiki gaming section. I'm currently using nvidia driver, all games that should run well on my old window setup just run worse on the linux. Not substantially but most games is like 20 fps drop from windows with random lag spikes. I have no idea where i should fix it.

How should i go about looking into this? What commands should i post for people to analyze this? Thank you!

Re: Trying to find cause of lag in Certain Steam Games

well, first it depends on the game and the graphics api: many games developed for windows use directx - which is windows only and mot available on linux. Here comes the dxvk translation layer into play: the usual directx calls get hooked into and translated into vulkan calls. Depending on how well the game is optimized and how well the translation can be done it can have quite some impact.
Better are games written in either opengl or vulkan directly - in such games the opengl/vulkan calls don't need to get translated but can be passed right through.
As there're also other apis at work like sound, input and network these can have additional impact, too.
TLDR: unless a game has a native linux version due to the translation there will always be more or less performance impact

Are you using wayland or X ?

If wayland, the current nvidia 550 driver misses several things that improve performance. (the soon-to-come 555 driver should work much better).

Using X11, everytime i tried wayland it was worst on it.

Currently its a single monitor setup on KDE and i've tried things like lowering my mouse polling rate, use feral gamemode, edit some settings on the nvidia control panel. I have the intel microcode.
The weird thing is i've had it run better on other distros, for ex: Manjaro or Fedora. I prefer arch so I assume its just the way im setting everything up on my end.

Re: Trying to find cause of lag in Certain Steam Games

I've switched over to endeavoros to see if a simplier setup still under an arch was the issue. Seems to be the same performance

Re: Trying to find cause of lag in Certain Steam Games

[     6.776] (==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"

Please post the output of ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d .

Tyhe xorg log shows a Logitech G903 LS  and a Razer Razer BlackWidow Elite .
Both are detected as keyboards and may cause confusion or conflicts .
Can you test with only one of them connected ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky
