Screen does not turn off after screen lock, gnome/gdm/wayland

super L -> screen locks, starts power save, then backlight turns back on.

trying to google/wiki but my searches aren't helping get anywhere. i do not see any indication of the event in journalctl or dmesg. i see the blocks in the systemd-inhibit --list but for some reason dead ending with those searches as well..

really hoping someone can help nudge me in the right direction, would like to have the powersave feature working when i leave my system.
