I'm using nvidia-dkms 555.58-2 and wlroots-nvidia 0.17.4 instead of the regular wlroots 0.17.4.

I've set up `MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)` and removed `kms` from `HOOKS` in my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. I've added `nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=1` to my `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT` in /etc/default/grub.

Trying to run glxgears reports about 40fps when run on a 240hz monitor. Trying to run eglgears_x11 results in a segfault. Trying to run eglgears_wayland seems smooth, but it puts a `libEGL warning: egl: failed to create dri2 screen` in the console, and I can't see the framerate and suspect that it's lower than it should be. Steam games run with ~20fps seemingly no matter what they are - tested this with Stardew Valley, which has a Linux native version, and Elden Ring, which runs through Proton.

I've done a bunch of research, and the closest issue to mine that I found is here - https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/h … een/262167 - and the author of the thread mentioned it was unexpectedly working as of version 545 of the nvidia drivers as the last post in the thread.

I'd appreciate any help I can get; I've been bashing my head against a linux wall for the past week trying to get nvidia to work with sway. Please let me know if I'm missing info.

I've set the VK_DRIVER_FILES environment variable to /usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json and rebooted. This didn't seem to change anything.

I'm not sure if they're Vulkan drivers like the wiki article mentions to check for, but I tried uninstalling vulkan-headers, vulkan-extra-layers, vulkan-utility-libraries, then restarting, but that also didn't seem to change anything except for the Instance Layers section of `vulkaninfo --summary` which now only has 5 items.

`eglinfo -B` still reads the same as before with the Wayland platform's renderer being zink Vulkan 1.3 and the X11 platform's renderer being llvmpipe. `glxinfo -B` is different:

What does that mean?
The glxinfo output suggest that glxgears will run on the nvida GPU/driver (eglgears might be a different matter) and also you can expect glxgears to run some thousand FPS on your CPU alone.
What if you run "__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0 glxgears"?
Might be a prime-sync issue…

I "tested" them by briefly running them to see if things had changed and got similar framerates to before - glxgears was ~40; Stardew Valley was ~20 when I set it to fullscreen.

Maybe to note - Stardew Valley opens windowed at first, which meant it takes up a third of my screen, and when it's windowed like that it runs at 60 fps which is the maximum framerate the game will run at. I noticed that glxgears works similarly, and doesn't work properly when initially starting: When it opens in a window, the window will be completely black, and it'll give me framerates as though it's not trying to render anything (~760 fps, which is still wildly below what I'd expect). After moving the window around, it'll actually start rendering the gears and drop to ~40 fps. When it's fullscreen, there's some pretty awful tearing, and it drops to ~20 fps. This doesn't happen with eglgears_wayland, though I'm not sure that's pertinent.

I tried running "__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0 glxgears" and had almost identical results.

At the bottom of that mess, I allowed glxgears to run for a little bit, starting at the blank state when it's first started, then fullscreening it, then un-fullscreening it. I did this and annotated it (the # and the text following is what I added) to give a bit better of an idea of how it's acting - you can see it goes from ~750 to ~20 to ~40 fps respectively.

It does say it's running with NVIDIA graphics, and nvidia-smi says that glxgears is running on the card, but I don't think I believe either of those.

Those readings are more than likely correct. The entire multi GPU and framebuffer copying is most likely not fully fleshed out yet on Wayland in general, as well as requiring explicit implementations and support for it by every single compositor. Seeing as you're using sway, which is a project that pretty much declares nvidia an entirely unsupported entity/driver, chances are that it's a combination of these parts.

Generally speaking I'd also strongly suggest you get rid of the unnecessary and potentially breaking global environment exports, like GBM_BACKEND, DRI_PRIME, VK_LAYER_NV_optimus, XWAYLAND_NO_GLAMOR and only set the two that are relevant (DRI_PRIME/VK_LAYER_NV_optimus) on demand for the application you want to (... via prime-run)

I think I've got it fixed. I'll write down what I did, because I'm not sure exactly which step or combination of steps fixed it.

I ended up uninstalling mesa, which uninstalled everything including nvidia-dkms, then reinstalled nvidia-dkms, wlroots-nvidia, and sway, and of course all of their dependencies. This didn't seem to change much; "eglinfo -B" still had the same output as above with llvmpipe as the renderer for X11 and zink as the renderer for Wayland.

I removed all my environment variables. Don't remember what all this changed because I did it at the same time as other steps.

I removed "nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=1" from my kernel parameters in /etc/default/grub and ran "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" to pact those changes, then rebooted to see what happened. As expected, "sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset" returned "N". "eglinfo -B" told me the renderer for both X11 and Wayland was the Intel driver, and glxgears ran as I'd expect it to run if things were working with the integrated graphics card.

I replaced the above parameters and rebooted. "eglinfo -B" currently shows (to my memory) the same as it did when I booted without the nvidia_drm params, with both X11 and Wayland using Mesa Intel graphics:

My understanding of "zink Vulkan 1.3" was wrong - I had figured it was similar to llvmpipe, which to my vague understanding is a way to render things through software, i.e. slower. zink isn't a software renderer; it's a translation layer that makes OpenGL instructions into Vulkan instructions which are faster (to my understanding) and play nicer with my graphics card. The above output now reads to me that instead of using llvmpipe as the OpenGL renderer for the X11 platform, it's sending things through zink to be used by my nvidia card. I can confirm this (i think) by running glxgears with the same DRI_PRIME value, then running nvidia-smi in another terminal instance to see the glxgears process showing up in the list of processes being handled by the nvidia card.

This also reflects in the games I've tried to run briefly via Proton: Elden Ring runs at its framerate cap, 60 fps, and shows up in nvidia-smi; Helldivers 2 runs smoothly at ~100 or so frames when inside the spaceship that acts as the menu, and shows up in nvidia-smi.

Stardew Valley runs natively on Linux (no Proton) and seems to use the integrated graphics card by default. It ran poorly in the menu at ~40 fps and didn't show up in nvidia-smi (though honestly for the menu in a 2D game i'd kinda expect the internal graphics card to give 60 fps without issue?). I switched the game to start with the command "DRI_PRIME=1 %command%" and it crashed on startup. I switched it to "DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_01_00_0 %command%", and it seems to run now at the expected 60fps and also shows up in nvidia-smi. I'm not sure what caused it to crash with DRI_PRIME=1 - I tried dumping "DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_01_00_0 eglinfo -B" and "DRI_PRIME=1 eglinfo -B" into text files and "diff"ing those files, and diff didn't output anything which I assume means they match exactly. Not going to worry about that too much as long as it works.

Your other environment variables will have broken things. For the nvidia card to act as a "dumb" renderer without a screen attached, a simple DRI_PRIME/the stuff that's set by prime-run is sufficient for the vast majority of applications. Defining a different GBM device will have forced your integrated card to use llvmpipe to render to the screen while the nvidia card rendered everything (... without a screen).

Right now things should be running as intended, your intel card has it's full acceleration capabilities and the nvidia card gets work on demand.

As for the stardew valley crash, the difference between DRI_PRIME=1 and DRI_PRIME=pcinumber is that for an application that wants to know which render devices exist, DRI_PRIME=1 simply changes the "order" of how devices are presented. If the application in question burns and dies when multiple render devices show up, you can enforce that only a specific card is visible to that process' request for a available render card - by specifying the exact PCI ID.
