Re: All files got wiped out

it's likely that a mount was unsucessful due to a dirty filesystem
try fsck and check the logs

Re: All files got wiped out

You made two cardinal mistakes: 1) not making backups and 2) not having a UPS and/or software power management to prevent a hard shutdown on power loss. What filesystems / disk configuration do you have? As mentioned, run fsck first, but if you get no listing of files whatsoever, that's probably not going to work.

Re: All files got wiped out

I would phrase 1) rather this: relied on one drive for storing impoetant files
as for 2): a ups only justifies its investment when frequent outages are to be expected - which is not the case for most of europe: our joint grid is very stable - for me investing even in a used system would be throwing money out the window right into a furnace: the batteries would be dead before the next outtage happens

A "0.000% downtime European grid" - that's a Euro patriotic falsehood. Data centers have fully redundant power supplies/backups in Europe.

As for 1) you should read Redundant drives are not backups

Re: All files got wiped out

I use btrfs to prevent filesystem corruption during sudden power loss. Recent alterations may be lost but it never breaks the filesystem thanks to the magic of CoW.

EDIT: bcachefs is the choice for CoW moving forward though, looks like btrfs is dead now.

well - as you asked for it - here we go

I not mentioned raid at all - if you imply raid jzst because someone mentions "more than one drive" I can just imagine the chaos and lack of reliability of your backups
if you're cool to store your data on one drive and think a single copy one another drive is a proper backup - ok ... I will not go any further on this as I know this will end nowhere usefull - have that point if you insist on having it

as for why datacenters have redundancy: the keyword here is high-availability
the average Joe doesn't provide mission-critical services to others - so no, average Joe doesn't need a ups - neither in europe or elsewhere
I'm just cocky enough to claim that the european joined grid is objectively superior over other grids - as recent events and thier analysis indicate

as for it's stability: the last outage I witnessed was over a decade ago and caused by human error
if I would had bought a ups that following day its batteries would had gone the way of the dodo years ago without me having required it once ever since - it would had just been a pure waste of money without any benefit in return

also: as the issue is, with high probability, that OPs data are not lost but just temporarily not accessible an ups would had made only one difference - if at all: the crash wouldn't had happend the moment the grid shut off

you asked for that -  because you didn't gave ANY thoughts about why I disagree with your two points - and I'm so tired of people like you

fine - we two don't agree upon two rather simple topics - but if you don't care about why don't throw in such bullshit and think you will get away with it ...

You made two cardinal mistakes: 1) not making backups and 2) not having a UPS and/or software power management to prevent a hard shutdown on power loss.

OP made these mistakes [on purpose] my ass

Re: All files got wiped out

Don't take and make it personal - keep using your system without any UPS and backups - you'll learn your lesson eventually, but keep your "so tired of people like you" and shove it up your ass.

Re: All files got wiped out

1. I'll remind everyone that a moderator has already posted on this thread, so there's a chance WorMzy is reading posts
2. the OP has actually not clarified on the situation, there's a good chance that indeed a mount fails but the data is still there (there's also a chance of catastrophic data loss)
3. there're tow kinds of people: those who have backups and those who have plans for backups tongue
4. the main reason for backups is an EBKAC (in doubt it's lennarts chair…), regardless of any power grid condition
5. I've maybe witnessed two power outages in my life - one like 5 years ago because someone dug through a cable and the other one as a child (and I'm not even sure that was a general one. I only remember that it was in a really hard winter and my parents had isolated the room with the chimney and we spent all day there because not even the central heating worked)
That being said, there were certainly more local power outages, caused by someone playing around with the house electricity. And we will never know who that was!
