[CLOSED] xorg runs for slim (login manager) but not for user

I look after a remote machine that is used my someone at that location. After a sysupdate, xorg is giving trouble.

* The slim login manager runs
* When the user logs in, the X session doesn't start properly and slim reappears
* Stopping the slim service and logging in via CLI, and starting X via "startx" also doesn't work
* There is no real indication in the Xorg log that something is wrong.
* The machine was using the vesa driver prior to the update. Adding the fbdev, ati and amdgpu drivers doesn't help. amdgpu should be the right  driver.
* I followed the advice here [https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=287936] due to having /dev/dri/card1 and no /dev/dri/card0 and the same kernel buffer messages. The fix in that thread has solved the /dev/dri/card0 problem, but still xorg won't run.

Current xorg log:

Re: [CLOSED] xorg runs for slim (login manager) but not for user

That log file shows an old kernel, are you sure it's current? It seems to show no errors.

Logs from `startx` go under ~/.local/share/xorg/ rather than /var/log/xorg/.

Have you checked the SLiM logs? It doesn't support systemd-logind properly so try a display manager that does.

multixrulz, as noted above, there is no error.  Xorg runs to completion and exits successfully.  It has done everything you asked it to.  So the error is in what you asked it to do - i.e., your ~/.xinitrc (at least for starting via startx/xinit).  Please post that here.

Re: [CLOSED] xorg runs for slim (login manager) but not for user

I came to the same conclusion, that there is no problem with X.

I can log in with vnc, directing it to use ~/.xinitrc, and it works, yet it doesn't work on the X running on the physical display. Even running startxfce4 from the commandline - which shouldn't have errors - doesn't work.

Contents of .xinitrc:

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
#exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice

ls /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d

Does this start X from a TTY login:

startx /usr/bin/xterm

The user was able to try this out today. The problem has fixed itself - which doesn't leave me satisfied, but now I don't have to work on it anymore.
