I want to compile my own options into my kernel, but the docs are a little confusing and recommend building something else in ABS first. I've read several ABS docs, but I still can't come up with any good package to build in ABS. Any recommendations?

make a /var/abs/local dir and give rw permissions to your user. go to /var/abs/path/to/the/package/you/want/to/compile/ & copy all the files from there to /var/abs/local/packagename/. then edit the PKGBUILD &(or) the .install file to your needs. run makepkg inside that dir. run pacman -A package
