I have a fairly fresh Arch Installation with Gnome Desktop. My sound is running fine. But on every reboot the sound is muted and I have to open up alsamixer and unmute the speakers which is kind of annoying. After unmuting I typed 'sudo alsactl store' but to no avail.

Pipewire is noted as running, is it also controlling your audio? You should be using pulseaudio/pipewire clients in that case, like gnomes sound center or pavucontrol or so. What output do you get from

Control your volume with pavucontrol/gnome-sound-center/pactl ... this should generally stick. FWIW for completeness sake, pipewire-pulse is installed?

I checked journalctl -b and searched for pulse and I got this:

Apparently I found a fix without a scripted workaround:
Find my speakers with
wpctl status
which gave me:
...

Then I typed
wpctl set-mute @DEFAULT_AUDIO_SINK@ toggle
and
wpctl set-volume 63 0.51
Finally I saved the wireplumber settings with
wpctl settings -s
It was important to set the volume with wpctl set-volume otherwise it was muted again on reboot. I will mark this thread as solved in a few days, since I'm still a little suspicious if this solution will hold or all of a sudden it will be muted again for no apparent reason.

manipulations via pavucontrol/pactl should actually stick and trigger the same logistics as wpctl set-volume... That should not really explain this. pipewire got updated with some backported patches yesterday, if you got those I'd find those more likely to be the fix.

Yea, it just stopped working which is weird. I did several shutdowns and reboots and it worked. But now it fails again .... Looks for me like a bug.

Hi,
I found another message during boot-up which might be the reason:

Error code 2 apparently means that the device couldn't be found.
Any way to fix that ?

I had the same issue with the External DAC/AMP of mine, it was set to mute randomly upon reboot after the install of a new kernel version. The waybar session displayed the icon on mute, but being the dolt that I am, thought that something else was the issue and proceeded to tinker with the systemd services and then broke the pipewire install. I couldn't be bothered to do the setup once more and then reinstalled the distribution once more and it still happened. Your forum post helped me solve this issue, many thanks !

Meanwhile my issue seems to be solved as well, though it is not really a good solution. I removed my Gnome desktop since i wanted to give KDE desktop a shot. It turns out I have no sound issues with KDE.
I'm still interested what the root cause of this problem is (apparently it's related to Gnome), so if anyone has an idea please let me know.
Edit: Again, I will mark this thread as solved in a few days unless the sound is muted again.

GNOME's audio subsystem has a tendency to overwrite whatever you're setting in other tools,. have you configured the unmute/desired volume within GNOME's own audio tools?

I am not sure if my problem is related to pipewire. However I narrowed it down a little and was able to figure that not Gnome itself is involved but rather Gnome Display Manager (gdm).
Here is what I tried:
- Disable gdm and enable sddm instead: Start Gnome and Plasma respectively -> no problems with sound.
- Do the same procedure with gdm enabled: Gnome and Plasma no sound (Sound can be obtained during the session by moving the volume slider in the panel all the way down to muted and then move it back to some higher level)
