NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

Hello Arch Forum users

I'm currently trying to set up Arch Linux on my Lenovo P51 with hybrid graphics.
Everything seems to be working alright except that when I run an application using PRIME (prime-run), the external screens freeze up.  The built-in display on the laptop remains responsive, but the external monitors freeze.  They still exist in user-space, I can move windows through them, but the displayed image isn't updated.  The external screens become responsive again if I restart X.  Just before X goes down, they will update with one frame(maybe more) which would have followed the one they got stuck on (Not up-to-date frames.)  The issue is more likely to occur when the application is running on one of the external screens.
It does not happen immediately, but the likelihood of it happening seems to be correlated to the level of NVIDIA card GPU utilization.

Some information about the system:
CPU:   Core I7 7700HQ
IGPU:  Intel HD Graphics 630
DGPU:  NVIDIA Quadro M1200
Built-in display is connected to the iGPU
External displays are connected to the dGPU
Using Xorg with AwesomeWM, launching with xinit

Things I've tried, many in combination with one another, over the last weeks:
Every driver from AUR back to 470xx.  I cannot reproduce the issue in 470xx, but that may be because I can't get GPU utilization above 50% according to nvidia-settings, and performance in applications is markedly worse than in the newer drivers.
Running with standard kernel and LTS kernel and the correlating newest drivers from the repos
Using xf86-video-intel and not using xf86-video-intel.
Verified that PRIME Synchronization is on.
Updated all firmware using fwupdmgr.
A large number of kernel parameter combinations.
Early loading through initramfs modules (added to modules in mkinitcpio.conf).
Tried nouveau PRIME, resulting in even worse performance than the IGPU alone.
Pretty much everything in the articles about NVIDIA, PRIME and the device specific wiki article.
List may be subject to change as I try or remember more things.

Just for info:  The BIOS allows for switching to discrete graphics only, and in that configuration, graphics rendering is very performant and rock stable across all monitors.  I mention this because it indicates that the monitor seizures are not hardware caused.  There are other reasons why I don't want to use that configuration.

Any help or suggestions that anyone can provide would be most welcome!  I am not not adverse to reinstalling from the bottom up to get a clean system for suggested fixes so they don't get tainted by other attempted fixes.

Below is an Xorg log from an instance with a freeze.  The only difference from a normal Xorg run is the warning about inputs lost (When switching the load application to full-screen)

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

An update, for anyone with the same issue looking for answers.

TL;DR:  You're probably stuck on 525.60.11 max, if you are up for maintaining your own dkms modules for future kernels, or 510 from the AUR if you're not.

Turns out I was wrong about nvidia-510xx-dkms.  This version does not have the issue.
According to a discussion on NVIDIA's forums, other people have the same issue.  One person in that thread swears by version 525.85.12 as the last one not broken.
I tried version 525.85.05 because that was easier for me as I could let myself be inspired by the nvidia-525xx-dkms package from AUR.  525.85.05 also had the issue, as did 525.78.01.
With version 525.60.11, I do not observe the issue.  Partial victory!  This version has the patch note "Improved the performance of PRIME render-offloaded applications." which I cannot really vouch for yet, as I haven't compared it to 510xx in terms of performance.
However, the most interesting thing to me is that 525.78.01, which is broken on my computer at least, has the patch note "Fixed excess CPU usage in hybrid graphics configurations where an external display is connected to an NVIDIA discrete GPU and configured as a PRIME Display Offload sink (also known as "Reverse Prime")." which describes my use-case, and I suspect that whatever they did here caused my issue.  And well, it's probably true that if the reverse prime doesn't render on the display, CPU load is lower.
All of this is to say that unless they actually fix the issue, it seems like I'm stuck with this driver which offers inferior performance on external monitors.  PRIME on the built-in display works fine, if not quite as performant as the latest drivers, at 60-80% from what I've seen without really testing.
One thing I noticed was that one of the patches I had to apply to compile the older versions fixed a compile error to do with thread synchronization, and my error could look like a deadlock or other race condition.  If I find the time and energy one day, I may see if I can locate something in the accessible source code from their package.
I also want to try their latest drivers directly from their own installer although I don't have high hopes for that.  I could also try the vaunted 525.85.12 although they're released by NVIDIA as data center drivers specifically.

For now, I'm going on vacation, but I may be back with more info in a week or two.

No idea whether that's also causing the main issue, but enable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting - use the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" kernel parameter  to also get rid of the simpledrm device and not have the cards swap order.

Do you run a compositor (picom etc.) along awesomewm?

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

I'm sure I've tried with most permutations of the common Nvidia kernel parameters, including that one, but i will try again when i get back from vacation, thanks for the suggestion.

I've observed the issue with and without picom. It seemed to happen faster with picom than without. I will try playing with that as well when I get back.

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

Update:  I tried with the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" kernel parameter, and the issue remains.  I also compiled the 525.85.12 version which I read in that thread linked in the first post that someone had had success with, but with no luck, the issue persists.  I've also tested Ubuntu 24.04 with Nvidia drivers 535.something and reproduced the issue there.  Since there was a Windows installation on the disc I threw in to install Ubuntu on, I even went and disabled Fast Boot, just for good measure, although I cannot see how it would help in this case.

My next plan is to try and reproduce the issue with my desktop (Core I7-4490K and NVidia GTX-780) to rule out issues specific to this particular hardware setup.  This might not be possible, though, since the card is Kepler and drivers newer than 470 might not pick it up at all.

By the way, is there a chance that the issue could be with the modeset driver?

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

Disabling PRIME Synchronization lowered apparent performance, but didn't resolve the issue.  I say apparent because I just use glxspheres64 with vsync disabled to trigger the issue, and I know that the numbers from that isn't conclusive.

One thing I've noticed is that switching to another vterm and back makes the external monitors update again.  However, sometimes the entire X session freezes up and I become unable to switch, probably because X stops taking input from the keyboard.

As expected, the desktop with the GTX 780 wouldn't work with nvidia-525xx, so I can't replicate the issue on it.  Got PRIME working on 470xx though.  Worked fine, as expected, if only at 1/4 the apparent performance of NVIDIA-only.

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

Do you get the freeze if you
1. attach only one output to the nvidia GPU?
2. enable TripleBuffering, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … en_tearing (do NOT immediately also enforce the full composition pipeline - it's implied by the multihead setup. Feel free to test it if nothing else helps…)

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

If I only have one display enabled, I do not get the freeze, even if it's an external display.  If I enable a second external display without the built-in display enabled, I get freezes with PRIME.  One difference is that when the built-in display is enabled, the external monitors will apparently freeze independently of each other, and as long as the built-in display is still responsive, I can recover by switching vterm.  Without the built-in display enabled, it seems that both external monitors freeze together, and I can't interact with the computer to switch vterm and have to strangle it with the power button.

I cannot seem to enable TrippleBuffer while running hybrid graphics.  nvidia-settings doesn't show the tab for it, and using the command line option gives an error message that no output matches.  This lines up with my expectations, as I don't see any screen tearing while using prime, which I do when running pure NVIDIA if I don't force full pipeline composition.  I have not attempted setting it using xorg configuration files as I have no experience with those, but I will if you still think it can help.

I am going to make a bug report to NVIDIA about the issue and see what they have to say, and until such a time that I can get a fix for it, I will just have to go an alternative path.
I could run NVIDIA-only through BIOS when using external monitors.  This shouldn't be too much of an issue, as power is also generally available when external monitors are.  Realistically it's more a case of switching to hybrid when I need battery longevity on the road once in a while.  One issue with that is that I have issues with suspend/resume when running NVIDIA-only, have an external monitor connected and have any external USB device connected, like my keyboard.
Or I can run hybrid with the 525.60.11 drivers (Or 510xx AUR ones) and live with the performance penalty.
Or I could buy a computer without hybrid graphics.  Integrated graphics are more powerful than my current dGPU anyway nowadays.  But then again, this isn't really about the graphics power, it's about the principle of the thing!  I want my stuff to work as intended!

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

I cannot seem to enable TrippleBuffer while running hybrid graphics.  nvidia-settings… the command line option

The thing linke in the wiki is an xorg configlet, there's no other way to enable that.

one display enabled, … second external display without the built-in

I was actually curious about the combo of one external + the internal output - if that's ok, try to either ENable triple buffering or forcefully DISable the full composition pipeline

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

With one external display and the built-in, the external display will freeze once PRIME is run, while the built-in will generally remain responsive.

I've tried the TripleBuffer in xorg.conf now.  I don't see any effect, so I'm not certain it's applying at all.  Below is my xorg.conf.  I borrowed it from someone who had got PRIME to work with xorg.conf, then added the TripleBuffer to the NVIDIA Device section as per this post on NVIDIA's forums

Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "layout"
	Screen "intel"
	Option "AllowNVIDIAGPUScreens"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier "intel"
	Driver "modesetting"
	BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "intel"
	Device "intel"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
	Option "AutoAddGPU" "false"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier "nvidia"
	Driver "nvidia"
	BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "nvidia"
	Device "nvidia"
	Option "TripleBuffer" "on"
	Option "ForceFullCompositionPipeline" "on"
	Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off"
EndSection

EDIT:  Played around with it a bit more.  Updated to my latest xorg.conf attempt.  Problem persists.

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

Here's my current position on this:

I'm sure the issue is in NVIDIA's drivers.  I've seen others complain about similar issues.  I doubt that it'll get fixed, at least for my somewhat older hardware, but hey, that's what you get when you buy GPUs from an AI company.
I've tested the performance of 525.60.11 running a realistic (for me) scenario with PRIME on external displays, and it was nowhere near good enough.  It seems that PRIME on just built-in display is fine.
If I launch X with NVIDIA as main driver and reverse PRIME to activate the built-in display, everything runs smoothly, stably and hot (high power consumption).

I've decided to set my system up to detect attached monitors when launching X and using the appropriate drivers (NVIDIA as main GPU if external monitors exist, Intel if not).  Then I can relaunch X very easily with the appropriate drivers on-demand.  If I go with the latest drivers, I can add warnings to my display management scripts so I remember to switch to avoid freezes.  I may, however, go with 525.60.11 for reasons of power consumption.  The PRIME Wiki article mention issues with the NVIDIA card not going to sleep when unused on newer drivers, and I seem to be having that issue.  I've seen the laptop remain at 30W+ with no applications launched in X, but more testing in that direction is warranted since I'm pretty sure I've seen it go as low as 10W- on recent drivers as well.  At least I don't seem to be having the same suspend/hibernate issues I had with the Intel card disabled in the BIOS.

I still have a glimmer of hope with regards to my bug report on NVIDIA's forums.  The fact that I can specify the breaking version of the drivers might give a developer at NVIDIA a chance to narrow it down.  I will update here with any news.

Didn't freeze, though?

Option "AsyncFlipSecondaries" "True"

This is for the modesetting driver, applied options are generally listed in the Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

Unfortunately, the issue persists with this option enabled as well.

Attached is the xorg config I ran with and the logs from the run.  It can be seen that the config applies.  By the way, it may be worth mentioning that the resolution of the external display definitely has an influence on the stability.  The larger the display, the higher the likelihood of failure.  I'm not at home right now, but borrowing a monitor running at 1920x1080.  At home, my external displays are 3840x2160 and 1920x1200 respectively.   The issue occurs most frequently when an OpenGL window powered by NVIDIA is resized, probably because that puts a large load spike on the GPU.

Re: NVIDIA PRIME freezes external monitors on Lenovo P51

My English is not good, the following content comes from the translator.
The same problem occurred to me, in two case:
1. X11: optimus-manager or envycontrol
When switching to NVIDIA mode, any application resize window was low fps on the external screen, and may tear when scrolling pages in Firefox. enable "forcecompos" does not solve the problem.
2. Wayland: All "PRIME" are invalid
Only enable "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" can be display external screen, but the external screen was low fps.

but built-in screen awayls perfect in two case.and i checked Wayland and X11  are use intel.
