"No" red circle icons on desktop (Gnome)

Hi, uber-noob, putzing around with files and the like.  After messing around with users, groups (and yeah, even hand editing the /etc/group file) I think I have just about undone most of the problems I've caused.

For a point of reference - I have the root user and dave user - for the time being, both belong to the same set of groups.

However, on my Gnome desktop, my three main icons (Computer, dave's Home, and Trash) all have a little - oh, I guess it looks like a "No Smoking" symbol - red circle with a line through it - on the upper right corner.

Anyone know what this is and/or how to get normal icons back?

Thanks!

Yes, root is fine.  "dave" is part of the "users" group - is there something else that defines someone as "user"?

Thanks!
