[solved] XPS 9340 screen flickers on Linux 6.10.X

Hi everyone,

I am using a Dell XPS 9340 with Arch Linux and when I upgrade my kernel to 6.10.X my screen starts to flicker as can be seen on the YouTube video below:

The laptop is connected to a Dell 4k screen over displayport/usb-c which doesn't have the same issue.

The laptop screen is a 120hz panel and the external screen is "only" 60hz. The issue remains whether I set the refresh rate to 60hz or 120hz using xrandr.

The CPU is an Ultra 7 155H and I am using the integrated Intel Arc GPU.

I am using i3 as my window manager using X11.

When I downgrade the kernel to 6.9.10 the issue goes away. So currently I am back on 6.9.10 to continue working but I could install 6.10.1 if that would help for troubleshooting.

Does anyone have the same issue?

If this is not the correct place to post this please do let me know where it would be appropriate to post about this issue.

This very much sounds like a kernel regression, which should be bisected and reported upstream to the kernel developers and the regression mailing list ..

Are you confident to do the bisection on your own or do you need some help?
If you want I could also provide you with pre-built kernel images for you to test ..

I have exactly the same problem with an XPS 16 (9640).
The laptop screen starts having problems as soon as the disk passphrase is requested, no problem with grub. I'm on plasma with wayland.
I've never bisected anything and I don't hold out much hope of having the time to try.

We have identified the issue and there was a patch made to resolve the issue back in July that was never merged.

Thanks for finding & posting the upstream issue! Let's give the upstream developers some time and if they don't get started with it raise it on the regressions list

I started receiving the flickering as well, using an AMD GPU with xfce. do you know if this identified issue will resolve it for AMD?

one thing to note I am also using picom, and when picom is not started on 6.10 kernel, no flickering. haven't had flickering issues before.  if you need more details, lemme know and I will create a new thread.

I just got a 9340, and was able to fix this issue with the kernel parameter "i915.enable_psr=0" which disable's intel's panel self refresh.

Thanks everyone for their input. It looks like the real solution will be a change to the kernel as InventorX's post shows but I will mark it solved already since the fix from Rohgoth solved the issue for me.
