Network Manager constantly kicks me off-line

Running Arch on my Lenovo T480s laptop. Im using network manger / applet / openvpn for my WiFi. I have been using my phone which has a 5G hot spot for the internet. I use my 5G phone all day every day with another phone as screen is cracked and its basically just a hotspot at this stage. I have had zero issues with the phones performance. WIth my Arch pc I am able to connect to the internet but it keeps randomly kicking me offline and sometime it starts asking for my vpn password and i have to click ok 5-10 times before in gives me internet access. The funny thing is that if i disable the hotspot on the phone and turn it back on network manager finds it and im back online usually only for a few seconds or minutes.
I dont even know how to troubleshoot this as i think its a software bug that needs to be fixed? Is anyone else aware of this issue? - Thanks

Re: Network Manager constantly kicks me off-line

Sanity check:

find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -f

Otherwise please post your complete system journal for the boot after losing the connection

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Re: Network Manager constantly kicks me off-line

Hi Im very sorry for the late reply.

I thought i posted a reply but it didn't make it online. I then realized that i had a problem with chromium as well. Im just scratching head at this stage. So here is the interesting thing.. i have stopped using my free VPN account from proton and now everything seems to be fine. My laptop is currently downloading a huge torrent file and have not been kicked offline yet. When i looked at the symptoms with the VPN up and running things like network manager not able to see my hot spot unless i restarted it, and also was kicking me other phone off line anytime i was using the laptop and just randomly kicking me every few seconds or minutes i thought for sure this was a network manager bug.
So i guess my question is there a bug in proton or some malicious code thats attacking my machine???
I wont bother posting the output of the journal command since everything is cool atm..

Please use

tags.

W/o any data I cannot tell you what's going on at all (you can access older journals, "sudo journalctl -b -1" for the previous boot) but it's kinda unlikely that some malware only starts acting when you use a VPN (except for state-driven malware, depending on whether your local dictator doesn't like his subjects to go see the real world - your call on their mindset wink)

Re: Network Manager constantly kicks me off-line

Journal looks like it's from this evening and there's neither a sign of a VPN nor a connection loss?

Not sure what posting issues you have, but you can cnp here and the code tags are supposed to be around the shell output, not in the subject.

Re: Network Manager constantly kicks me off-line

I was blaming the VPN but that is not the issue.. it just kicks me off at random times. Should i blame the phone then? is a huawei honor something...

Re: Network Manager constantly kicks me off-line

You're connecting to

Jul 29 22:24:34 archlinux wpa_supplicant[1133]: wlan0: SME: Trying to authenticate with 3e:55:08:ea:ce:d3 (SSID='drksde' freq=5745 MHz)

Is that actually the phone?

Jul 29 22:24:34 archlinux NetworkManager[1110]: <info> [1722288274.7330] manager: NetworkManager state is now CONNECTED_GLOBAL
…
Jul 29 22:27:07 archlinux sudo[3327]: nhgtshrk : TTY=pts/1 ; PWD=/home/nhgtshrk ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/journalctl -b

There's a 2.5 minute run between the connection and you dumping the journal - were you even kicked during this time?

You've a good to very good signal and then the beacon disappears and doesn't show up for a while.
No local errors - try to keep the phone busy (play some youtube videopodcast) and see whether the archlinux connection ever gets lost during that time.
I indeed suspect the phone simply powers down the wifi, is it running on external power supply or battery?

Do other systems connect to the hotspot?
Have you considered https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Tethering ?

Re: Network Manager constantly kicks me off-line

i only use the 5G phone as hot spot for my new ( undamaged screen ) phone, and laptop. I have never ran into this issue until recently. blue-tooth scan dose not detect my phone.. i am online now with usb tethering on my laptop VPN is up and running (didn't even know it had that feature) big_smile Thanks for your help bro. Ive got a bad ass connection in my school and im gonna keep trouble shooting this wifi issue tomorrow morning. This is probably gonna end like the guy in office space killing the printer.
