[SOLVED] KDE Plasma hangs randomly while playing Counter-Strike 2

Hello, I've been using Arch Linux for a month now and it's been working great. However, when I am playing Counter-Strike 2 using Steam, at a random point in time the game starts gradually losing FPS for a few seconds and then my whole desktop is unresponsive. The mouse moves extremely slowly and my keystrokes either don't get registered or get registered after a few minutes. If there was any music playing during this, it will sound more and more crippled until it stops completely. At this point I am forced to shut down my computer through the physical power button. There is no specific setup or action in the game that makes this happen, it can happen during rounds, at the start of the round, even in the main menu. It has never happened earlier than ~30 minutes of being in-game, though.

This hasn't happened only with CS2 though, the DE hanging with the exact same symptoms also happened to me when I was installing an AUR package of Mullvad VPN. While in the building process, Plasma would always hang when it got to 165/170 and the installation would stop. This occurred with both yay and makepkg. I tried first switching to tty3 and then installing the AUR package, which worked with no problems, so I am sure the DE is the one at fault.

The only way I found to recover my session without force restarting is to quickly switch to tty3 (which also lags when entering your login) and kill the CS2 process using htop.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G (16) @ 4.67 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti [Discrete]
Kernel: 6.6.42-1-lts
DE: KDE Plasma 6.1.3
WM: KWin (Wayland)
Nvidia driver installed is nvidia-lts

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma hangs randomly while playing Counter-Strike 2

I'm not an expert, but I have seen these symptoms happen before on my PC when it ran out of RAM. Just out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have installed?

Also, can you post the output when you run the command "swapon -s" (without the quotation marks of course) in your terminal?

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma hangs randomly while playing Counter-Strike 2

I have 16GB (8+8) of RAM installed. swapon -s outputs this:

Filename Type Size Used Priority

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma hangs randomly while playing Counter-Strike 2

Hmm, yeah 16 gigs does feel like it should be able to run CS2 without running out of memory... unless you have something else memory intensive running as well while you game (lots of browser tabs, another game in the background, etc)?

I am slightly concerned that the swap space you have is on zram (because swapon said the swap is at /dev/zram0), which afaik is stored in RAM itself. So if you did manage to completely fill up your 16 gigs (like with a lot of browser tabs or a memory intensive game) then your PC would have nowhere else to store crucial data and completely lock up.

This line in your Journalctl output also looks to me like there is indeed a memory shortage neutral

Jul 31 21:30:45 archlinux systemd-journald[403]: Under memory pressure, flushing caches.

Have you ever checked how full the memory (Mem) is when you go to htop to kill CS2? Would be useful to know what that looks like when the system is hanging.

If it turns out to be a memory problem, then there are a couple of solutions so we can go from there, but again I'm not an expert so I'm still not 100% sure it's a memory problem, I don't want to give you the solution to the wrong problem and clutter up your system.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma hangs randomly while playing Counter-Strike 2

Alright, I started CS2 up with System Monitor beside it to see the memory usage and started playing some games. The memory usage started normal at 3GB, but from there it started slowly going up, notably increasing by ~0.2GB at every round start, and after 2 hours of playing and it reaching 10GB of memory usage the hang started. It seems to be a memory leak within the game? I started up tty3 (the login prompt took a few minutes to show up, it also was running very slowly) and ran htop. It showed that 16.0/16.4GB + all 4GB of swap were being used, and after sorting by memory usage there were ~50 CS2 processes running, more exactly "[CS2 game files]/game/bin/linuxsteamrt64/cs2 -steam", all of which were clogging up my RAM. After killing one of the processes the rest also shut down. Very weird, could this be a problem with CS2 itself? That wouldn't explain the AUR package problem I had though.

Also, I'd like to add that CS2 runs just fine on Windows.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma hangs randomly while playing Counter-Strike 2

(Jeez, I did not realize I wrote an absolute wall of text, sorry in advance)

Yeah that does definitely sound like a memory leak might be in the game...I don't see why CS2 would need anywhere near 50 processes.
Also, that mullvad-vpn AUR package is crazy! I tried installing it just to see what happens and it had my CPU pegged at 100%, increased my memory usage by like 15GB, and took up like 15-20GB of my hard drive just in cache while building! I don't know if I've ever seen an install process go this hard on my PC before, let alone one for a VPN app, are you sure this thing's not a virus?

One potential reason why CS2 might work on Windows even with the memory leak is that Windows by default uses a system similar to Linux's swap (I think it's called "commit memory" or "pagefile" or something) where once it runs out of RAM, it makes this file on your hard disk which is just like any other file and then treats it like RAM, making the file bigger and bigger as it needs more memory so that it can never really "run out". Which is also why Windows PCs get more and more sluggish when you fill up their storage, there's no space for the extra RAM it needs! Or at least, that's my understanding of it. But then again, maybe the Windows version of CS2 just doesn't have the memory leak. Who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Linux does technically have a built-in system to prevent memory pressure from freezing systems by killing memory-hogging processes called OOM-killer on paper, but I personally never had any luck with waiting for it to kick in when my desktop froze up after running out of memory in the past. I don't really know what's going on with that, so I use a solution that doesn't rely on OOM-killer.

Ok. So now that we've identified the problem as most likely a memory shortage, there are a few options I know of, but there are probably even more that I don't know about. I'd encourage you to look around the internet for solutions to your problems if you like learning about this sort of stuff (I mean, you installed Arch, I think I can assume that you like this stuff), you might come across a silver bullet that's perfect for what you need that I didn't know about. I've found that the Arch wiki is an amazing place to find information about these things.

Anyway, here are the options that I currently know exists:

1. Get the memory leak fixed
For this, you'd probably have to submit a bug report to the game developer (CS2 was made by Valve... I think?) or look for an existing one and upvote it or something. Basically get Valve to fix the problem for you. Then again, Valve might already know about the memory leak and in that case they're probably working on a fix as we speak.
Pros:
Permanent, at least until the next memory leak gets introduced (which is hopefully not soon)
Everyone else who plays CS2 on Linux will also automatically benefit
Requires the least tinkering in your PC
Cons:
Probably a decent amount of effort required
Might take some time to get fixed

2. Buy more (or higher capacity) RAM
This is a bit of a nuclear option, but hey, more RAM never hurts!
Pros:
More RAM = harder to run out of memory = harder to make the system freeze up
More RAM is useful in a lot of scenarios both inside and outside gaming
Very simple solution
Cons:
Most expensive option
Probably only delays the death of your system if there is indeed a memory leak. Might let you get a few more hours before you have to restart CS2, at least until the memory leak is fixed

3. Swap
Basically, it does almost the same thing Windows does with the file on disk being used like RAM, except that it doesn't do the getting bigger and bigger thing that Windows does. The user sets the size of the file up front. The swap that you currently have on your PC is stored on the physical RAM itself, which AFAIK is a bit unorthodox. Usually swap goes on the disk.
Also, this is the solution I chose for my PC, so it's the one I know the most about.
Pros:
More memory for free, makes it harder to freeze everything up
Cons:
Swap speed depends on how fast your disk is at read/write, but it's generally a decent bit slower than physical RAM. So if you go past 15GB-ish stuff that's not super high priority like browser tabs might start feeling very slow and lag even on NVMe drives. I really wouldn't recommend using a spinny platter hard drive for swap.
Uses the disk, which is going to wear down the disk the same way saving/deleting a lot of data on your disk very quickly would do. So I imagine the lifespan of your disk might get somewhat shorter.
Like buying more RAM, probably only delays the death of your system if there is indeed a memory leak
You need to reserve the size of your swap space up front, which means that that amount of your disk is now unusable for normal storage (I think there might have been some third-party hacky implementations of automatic resizing swap in the past, but I dunno if any are still supported. Fingers crossed that someone implements it in the kernel at some point!)

4. Some mechanism that kills the memory-hogging process
This is (AFAIK) a bit like the built-in OOM-killer I talked about before, except that you can do/configure stuff to take action before the system freezes completely.
I'm afraid I don't know a ton about this solution, I mostly only know that it exists and a bit about how it works.
Pros:
There looks to be a pretty decent bit of customization you can do, from user-triggered killing to pre-configured limits on how much RAM can be used before automatic systems kick in
Cons:
It'll kill the process using too much memory, so one way or another CS2 will have to crash once the 2 hours are up and the system starts lagging. Not the most graceful solution

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma hangs randomly while playing Counter-Strike 2

The problem indeed is a memory leak within CS2, I have found a GitHub issue with the same problems created in March, so it's not a problem on my part. Reopening the game after every match should be a temporary fix to this issue until the devs fix it. I have also made an 8GB swap partition on my disk so in case I hit more than 16 gigs of memory used at a time the DE doesn't implode.
Thanks for the help!
Also, Mullvad VPN is a pretty popular VPN service I have used for a few years now, and the AUR package is the one shown on the app's arch wiki page. I can say pretty confidently that it's not a virus, it is weird though that it's so intensive, the install process takes about 10 minutes which is a lot.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma hangs randomly while playing Counter-Strike 2

Good to know! Though wow, March is a long time ago, the devs better be getting on that fix wink
I know next to nothing about MullvadVPN, so... I dunno, if it works for you then it works I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you reckon that this is a good enough solution for you, it's technically forum custom to prepend "[Solved]" to the topic title so other helpers can see that this topic doesn't need any more attention.

Cheers!
