EB Garamond fonts from Georg Duffner were removed?

The package otf-eb-garamond which contains original fonts from Georg Duffner and includes true variations of 12pt and 8pt sizes, plus small capitals and initials, was removed from AUR, for now we can only install the one called ebgaramond-otf (modified by Octavio Pardo) which is incomplete and doesn't have initials and small caps neither the true 8pt and 12pt sizes. Georg Duffner is still working on merging his original and the work of Octavio into version 2.

The package otf-eb-garamond was removed as pretext of being a duplication of ebgaramond-otf which is incorrect.

So what is your question? Yes the package was merged as you have correctly linked the relevant AUR request thread

Re: EB Garamond fonts from Georg Duffner were removed?

The remaining package ebgaramond-otf that was modified by Octavio doesn't have initials, small capitals and true 8pt and 12pt sizes, which were present in the removed otf-eb-garamond.

So either ebgaramond-otf should add the missing font files, or revert the removal of otf-eb-garamond.

You should report the lack to the package maintainer in order to switch to the other repository or deal with it

Of course keeping two identical packages for some missing characters in the font is pretty useless

It's not useless, having a number of characters missing from a font is huge thing for any writer, especially if you edit already written articles which used them.

Re: EB Garamond fonts from Georg Duffner were removed?

There're dozens of garamond fonts anyway.
https://github.com/octaviopardo/EBGaramond12 looks actually more dated/less amaintained than the two fonts in https://github.com/georgd but those seem to lack bold variants and there's https://github.com/georgd/EB-Garamond/issues/179

As long as the metrics are compatible, users could probably just mix and match the two strains (eg. default to Georg's fonts and use Octavio's fork for bolds.

For reference: there's like half a dozen picom forks in the AUR.

Unless I missed it, there were no replies to the merge request.  So if even the maintainer of the now-removed package didn't feel it should stay in the AUR, then that's that.  You can still build your own otf-eb-garamond and have the font just as you want - so what's the issue?

Re: EB Garamond fonts from Georg Duffner were removed?

EB Garamond is one of the most famous, classical, free and open source serif fonts, so having access to that limited version only via AUR seems to be abnormal on Arch Linux. Most distros like Debian, Ubuntu, Tumbleweed... already have Georg's font available in their official repos.

Re: EB Garamond fonts from Georg Duffner were removed?

Yeah, and none of that is relevant to the issues here.

For a package to remain in the AUR it needs to follow community standards and have someone who wants to maintain it.  For it to make it to the main repos, other goals must be met which are outlined in the wiki.  How famous a font is, how much you personally want it, and what other distros do are not among those criteria.

This isn't meant to sound cold - I get that you passionately want a certain variant of the font.  That's great.  But it simply has nothing to do with why the AUR package was merged.

They were not merged or combined, they were different fonts from different designers and simply one of them removed.

Thanks.

Re: EB Garamond fonts from Georg Duffner were removed?

The two packages are now merged.

It you think this lack of some fonts is an issue, explain it to the package maintainer and describe the alternative sources for the font.

There are millions of fonts on the web and thousands of variants for the same fonts, one package per font seems enough.

In the case some maintainers want to include the package in the official repositories (as long the license allows it) they will do.

Unfortunately until now no maintainers has expressed the wish to move it to the extra repository, this may be sad but there's nothing abnormal.

Thanks.

The AUR is not an official repository and the AUR maintainers might or might not read the forums. Write a comment on the AUR page of thr existing package and tell them what you've told us.
