This doesn't have anything to do w/ the modesetting driver and you dn't want to use fbdev or vesa under any circumstances.
The dedicated GPU cannot be initialized, this happens on the kernel level and is most likely some harware related problem/race condition/whatever.

I'll look into your notebook model, don't install any DDX drivers!

They all seem to suggest that you can absolutely configure the hell out of the firmware and that includes de/enabling the GPU and I'd look around those settings.
