Strangest suspend issue. Resumes opening lid, fails clicking a key

Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 9, i5-1145G7 w/ integrated GPU, no NVIDIA, no proprietary drivers, Gnome on Wayland. The laptop suspended and resumed fine with s2idle for over a year, but for the past few weeks has been showing the following pattern:

  • Case 1. I close the lid, the laptop goes to sleep. I open the lid the laptop comes back just fine.

  • Case 2. I issue 'systemctl suspend' (or let the laptop go to sleep for inactivity). I hit a key or press the power button, the laptop fails to come back and freezes completely. All I can do is forcefully power it off holding the power button. Nothing is logged.

  • Case 3. I issue 'systemctl suspend' (or let the laptop go to sleep for inactivity). I close and reopen the lid, the laptop comes back just fine.

Case 2 also screws suspend-then-hibernate: the machine tries to come back from suspension to go into hibernation, but remains stuck and the battery drains completely.
Has anyone seen anything like this? Tried downgrading systemd, to no effect.

Re: Strangest suspend issue. Resumes opening lid, fails clicking a key

laptop fails to come back and freezes completely. All I can do is forcefully power it off holding the power button. Nothing is logged.

- Same w/ LTS kernel? (Ie. is this a kernel regression)
- freezes at what state, can you see the GUI?
- https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) (nb. you've to actively enable it before crashing the system) - the moment you push the power button, the journal is lost
- https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=297431 (past few weeks and esp. if you get a visible display)
