I use a TB3 Lenovo Docking Station with my Lenovo Thinkpad T14s G3 (AMD) at work.
The docking station connects 2 screens as well as ethernet.
8 out of 10 times the system will crash when disconnecting the docking station.
It results in a weird freezing of the laptops screen (as in fully black or showing maybe a minimized window) where I have to force off the laptop.

Here is the journald log before crashing:

I now made the captive_portal script executable since I never noticed the error before, but I guess it won't be the solution:

Any ideas / suggestions? Thanks!

Alright, I got some feedback
1. can you still ssh into the system? - Didn't try because I had no other system to connect from
2. or switch to another VT (ctrl+alt+f3)? - Doesn't work
3. or reboot by frenetically pressing ctrl+alt+del ? - Doesn't work
1. from the multi-user.target (2nd link below):
I boot with multi-user.target to I land in tty. From there I didn't ~10 connect/disconnects without any issue.
I then started wayland from the tty. After 3 or 4 connects/disconnect it crashes/freezed again
Then I tried something else:
I tried disconnecting my ethernet connection (which comes via the docking station) manually via NetworkManager Tray Icon before disconnecting the docking station.
That seemed to fix the issue because I did like 15 connects/disconnect (without having ethernet connected) and didn't cause a crash/freeze.
My ethernet connection is a connection with some manually set IP routes + an automatic connection to my OpenVPN server (all via NM-Gui).
Basically the manually set IP routes bypass my VPN but everything else gets routed through VPN.
I don't think this is VPN related but rather somehow general ethernet related?
Thanks!

Did you have network on the multi-user.target?
There're some bugs reported (iirc all iwlwifi) for systems where the rj45 plug acts as implicit rfkill which completely throws off iwlwfi.
The behavior tends to be configurable in the UEFI.

is in your log, not sure how relevant that is, though (was the crash around that time?)

Uhm I actually didn't try if I had network on multi-user.target. Probably not.
I couldn't find any related option in UEFI (=BIOS?).
I noticed that I also had this networkmanager dispatcher script but I have no removed it as well:
#!/bin/bash
enable_disable_wifi ()
{
result=$(nmcli dev | grep "ethernet" | grep -w "connected")
if [ -n "$result" ]; then
nmcli radio wifi off
# echo "off"
else
nmcli radio wifi on
# echo "on"
fi
}
if [ "$2" = "up" ]; then
enable_disable_wifi

if [ "$2" = "down" ]; then

Yep, removed it but had a crash just afterwards again when disconnecting the docking station
It also only happened "recently".. I would say 2-3 months ago? Prior to that (I own the laptop for 1-2 years now) I didn't face that issue.

If the sysrq doesn't work either you'd have to setup https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump to hopefully get to a backtrace (which sure would be nice to debug the issue)
When it comes to workarounds a udev rule that intercepts the disconnect and cuts the network automatically might help.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Udev#About_udev_rules - "udevadm monitor --property --udev" to get to the event (even w/ the ethernet connection beign disabled)
nb. that udev rules run as root and don't have any of your users environment available
As for "recent": does it also happen w/ the LTS kernel?
Do you have more NM dispatcher scripts?

Sadly I just had a crash even with the ethernet connection disabled.. so my previous assumption that it was related to the active ethernet connection might be wrong.
I will now try the LTS kernel.
Edit 2:
Also happens on LTS, also again without the ethernet connection being active.
So next step would be to compile kernel (which I have never done before) to use kdump?

You don't have to compile a special kernel, the arch kernels have the necessary options set.
Have you tried to remove the udev rules, notably the battery one?

Removing the udev rules didn't help.
If the arch kernel already has the options set, I just need to install kexec, set the crashkernel size in the bootloader options and then tell kexec which kernel to boot on a crash.
Is this the correct command then?
kexec -p [/boot/vmlinuz-linux] --initrd=[/boot/initramfs-linux.img] --append="irqpoll nr_cpus=1 reset_devices"
The command according to the wiki would be different but I don't have a kdump kernel sind I don't install kdumpster but use kexec with the arch kernel?
kexec -p [/boot/vmlinuz-linux-kdump] --initrd=[/boot/initramfs-linux-kdump.img] --append="root=[root-device] irqpoll nr_cpus=1 reset_devices"

The stuff in square brackets are [plcaholders] - you're building a kernel commandline like in your bootloader.
(but confusingly not the section headers in the service, that's proper syntax in case you want to start the kdump kernel w/ a service. Not required, though - iirc you can trigger the crash at will?)
Online
Mhh I don't get it.
I thought the concept was adding a buffer to my currently booted kernel so I can safe crashes to it.
Then I would boot the "kdump kernel" to read that buffer.
I can force/trigger the crash manually.
I am also on LUKS/LVM2 if that matters.

Yes - the only thing is that "[/boot/vmlinuz-linux]" would be "/boot/vmlinuz-linux" if that's the valid path to a kernel etc.
You edit your bootloader to add crashkernel=256M to the main kernel (the one that's gonna crash), then kexec the kdump kernel (the one that's gonna take over) and the parameters there are a bit like the ones in your bootloader kernel commandline.
Online
Thank you for your guidance but I am still not clear on how to get it done :S
1. install kexec-tools
2. set crashkernel=256 in systemd-boot options for linux kernel
3. reboot
4. run the command "kexec -p /boot/vmlinuz-linux --initrd=/boot/initramfs-linux.img --append="irqpoll nr_cpus=1 reset_devices"
5. Force the crash
6. Then the kdump kernel should load automatically
7. Export crash with "makedumpfile -z -d 31 /proc/vmcore /root/vmcore.crashdump_compressed"
Correct? Thanks again!

You should first test the controlled "crash" via the sysrq to establish principal functionality before attempting the oncontrolled condition and you'll also maybe have to pass the root parameter (same as in your "options root=UUID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx" booloader config)
Edit: the system will btw. not explode or so - you can just try and worst case is it doesn't work

Hm so I loaded kexec with the following command:
kexec -p /boot/vmlinuz-linux --initrd=/boot/initramfs-linux.img --append="irqpoll nr_cpus=1 reset_devices cryptdevice=UUID=xxx-obfuscated-xxx:lvm:allow-discards root=/dev/myvolume/arch zswap.enabled=0 nowatchdog rd.luks.options=discard"
I then forced the crash via the sysrq command.
It froze my system both nothing happend.
I had to force off (hardware power button) the system.
@Edit... ah maybe the "cryptedvice= and root= parameter should have been at the beginning (or before reset_devices). Will try again in 1-2 hours.

I could re-boot the device after the crash with ctrl+alt+entf spamming though.

Hm several kernel updates later this issue is sadly still present.

Sorry, I missed your previous comment

What means a journal should get preserved and can be obtained w/ eg. (for the previous, "-1", boot):
sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Hey again Seth and thanks for your help!
So I think I managed to load the kexec kernel.
I managed to force the sysrq crash and also managed to get a dump afterwards.
Afterwards I rebooted, loaded the kexec kernel again and after a long working day the crash happend again.
Here is the relevant journalctl output. To me it looks again like information is missing in the journalctl?

That snippet doesn't indicate the system was rebooted by ctrl+alt+del freneticism
If you got a kernel panic while having a crash kernel executed, you need to save the core dump to analyze it - see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump#Manual_steps
If you can reboot the system w/ massive ctrl+alt+del spam, the kernel did not panic and you'll get a journal out of that which you can inspect w/ "sudo journalctl -b -1" after the reboot.

Alright, the crash doesn't let me reboot with ctrl+alt+del spam.
So I have to follow the manual steps of kdump which requires compiling a kdump kernel.
I will need some time for this as I never compiled a kernel before.
I also tried the AUR package kdumpst but that seems to only work with grub installed (I use systemd-boot).
Will report back soon!

You don't need to compile a kernel, all Arch kernels have kdump enabled.

You don't need to compile a kernel, all Arch kernels have kdump enabled.
I thought I had to create a kdump-kernel which I will boot?
I will need one system kernel and one kdump kernel?
