[SOLVED] Problems launching steam

It starts, and shows up in the tray, but when the tray icon is clicked, a pure white window launches, then closes a few seconds later. This loop ad nauseum. Launching steam from terminal and observing log output doesn't show any errors. This comes after it working fine for months. No resolution after updating the system. Any ideas for how to begin troubleshooting?

I'm not sure what the Vulkan-related errors were about... Regardless, running Steam with the argument suggested towards the top resolved the problem!

/usr/bin/steam -no-cef-sandbox

Probably this isn't ideal though, so here's some Vulkan diagnostics:

After looking into what the 'CEF sandbox' even is, I find:

The CEF is the Chromium Embedded Framework and is used by Steam to power its web browser. It's the same web browser engine Google Chrome uses.

And remembering having seen other threads on Reddit claiming that similar issues as to mine had to do with hardware-acceleration in Steam web views, I decided to check the options for that in Steam.

Lo' and behold, web view hardware acceleration is and was disabled, but HWDEC was enabled. Disabling HWDEC of video content in the Steam-chromium web views allows me to launch Steam without disabling the CEF sandbox!

This doesn't make much sense to me, though. I use NVIDIA HWDEC in mpv fine, and other Chromium-based browsers, including Google Chrome (google-chrom-stable) itself.

*   WebGL: Hardware accelerated
*   WebGL2: Hardware accelerated
*   WebGPU: Disabled
*   WebNN: Disabled

Maybe this has to do with Vulkan being disabled? As you can see though, HWDEC is enabled...

A light web search perusal implies that Vulkan has suboptimal support in some cases with noveau and the binary NVIDIA drivers, and that this ought to be improved in the new open-source kernel modules (nvidia-open-dkms). Perhaps, I will look into that next.
