Screen feels and looks raw

After installing arch with Xfce desktop the screen feels and looks raw (not sharp/crisp) vs the Gnome desktop.
I have installed xorg lightdm, is anything else missing?
Thx

Re: Screen feels and looks raw

Well, only gnome creates enough heat through CPU load in order to adequately boil you screen… tongue

https://deepl.com/
Wtf do you mean by "raw"? lol

In doubt, link a screenshot/photo and post the output of "xrandr -q" and your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: Screen feels and looks raw

Did you run Gnome on Wayland and XFCE on xorg?

What's the DPI of your screen? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#D … ze_and_DPI

But as mentioned post those two outputs and logs seth asked for

What's the DPI of your screen? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#D … ze_and_DPI
But as mentioned post those two outputs and logs seth asked for

Only Xfce desktop.

Remove xf86-video-vesa

it looks faded and not sharp, there is a little blurry feeling.

More vague adjectives won't help, please link a screenshot or photo.

I cannot really find the your panel (SHP 5203), what kind of notebook is this?
Is it supposed to have a wide-gamut display?
Do you have an https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/ICC_profiles ?

Re: Screen feels and looks raw

That's not a notebook model - Dell sells Lattitudes and Precisions under that number. And multiple configurations.
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

And upload and link pictures of gnome and xfce - bonus points if the difference shows up on screenshots.
For all we know you could just look at different backlight intensities…

Edit: https://imgur.com/upload/

Edit: also please post the output of "xrandr --verbose" - maybe we can control the BPC

Re: Screen feels and looks raw

Screen looks better since xf86-video-vesa was removed.

No.

curl: (6) Could not resolve host: 0x0.st

So your internet is broken, too?

ip a; ip r; dig 0x0.st

The screenshot looks perfectly fine - do you see whatever you object when looking at that image in a gnome session?

	Colorspace: Default
		supported: Default, BT709_YCC, XVYCC_601, XVYCC_709, SYCC_601, opYCC_601, opRGB, BT2020_CYCC, BT2020_RGB, BT2020_YCC, DCI-P3_RGB_D65, RGB_WIDE_FIXED, RGB_WIDE_FLOAT, BT601_YCC
	max bpc: 12
		range: (6, 12)
	Broadcast RGB: Automatic
		supported: Automatic, Full, Limited 16:235

Do

xrandr --output eDP-1 --set "Broadcast RGB" "Full" # or
xrandr --output eDP-1 --set "Broadcast RGB" "Limited 16:235" # or
xrandr --output eDP-1 --set "Broadcast RGB" "Limited"

change anything about the situation?

Re: Screen feels and looks raw

xrandr --output eDP-1 --set "Broadcast RGB" "Full"

bullseye, has lit a bit more the screen.

xrandr --output eDP-1 --set "Broadcast RGB" "Limited 16:235"

dims it a bit.

ip a

lists all interfaces and internet does work, not sure why it gave that error,

xfce4 xfce4-goodies

were installed.

I erased the gnome session a week ago and remembered it looked better, but your suggested tweaks have improved the screen.

Anything else I should look for?

Thanks for your help

Re: Screen feels and looks raw

b/c of your internet:
please post the output of

find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -f

Is "Limited 16:235" equivalent to "Automatic" ?

"Limited 16:235" and "Automatic" are not equivalent.
"Automatic" and "Full" are equivalent.

Re: Screen feels and looks raw

"Automatic" and "Full" are equivalent.

So basically

bullseye, has lit a bit more the screen.

wasn't true? The asserted state when you were running "xrandr --verbose" was "Automatic"?

Sicne we've still not seen anything but a screenshot that looks completely normal: make sure you're not just talking about https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Backlight

Re: Screen feels and looks raw

"Automatic" and "Full" are equivalent

both have lit the screen equivalently

"Limited 16:235"

has dimmed the screen, if that's what you ment in your first question.

I will go over the Backlight article.
