Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

I have a very bad internet connection, but everything is fine in Speedtest. The problem is most noticeable in Pacman and Steam. Downloading in them is very slow.
I tried replacing the driver with r8168, but nothing changed.

Motherboard: ASUS PRIME A320M-K
Network card: Realteck 8111H Gigabit LAN Controller

Re: Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

There are indeed fast mirrors for pacman!
But Steam is still slow.
Is there any additional information I can provide? If so, how?

Sorry, but how do I do this? I edited the steam_dev.cfg config. If this changes anything, then it's not just slow loading games, but also launching them. This didn't happen on Linux Mint and Windows.

Re: Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

Launching games will probably not relate to your network speed.

Is there (still) a parallel windows?
3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

Next, please post the output of

find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -f

and please get ABBS and run the speedtest.

Is steam from the repos or a flatpak? Do you experience a slow network connection with anything else and/or does pacman have decent throughput now?

This is how Google translates it! I meant launching Steam, not games in it. I mean my internet connection is good everywhere, as is the speed, and only Steam is slow. It starts up slowly and games download terribly slowly too. When I want to launch Windows or Linux, I put the required disk in and disconnect the second one, so I don't have dual boot.

Here is the output of the command you asked me to enter:

[humst@hum] find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -fdbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher.service | system
display-manager.service                  | system
getty@tty1.service                       | getty.target.wants
NetworkManager.service                   | multi-user.target.wants
NetworkManager-wait-online.service       | network-online.target.wants
ntpd.service                             | multi-user.target.wants
p11-kit-server.socket                    | sockets.target.wants
pcscd.socket                             | sockets.target.wants
pipewire-pulse.socket                    | sockets.target.wants
pipewire-session-manager.service         | user
pipewire.socket                          | sockets.target.wants
reflector.service                        | multi-user.target.wants
remote-fs.target                         | multi-user.target.wants
systemd-userdbd.socket                   | sockets.target.wants
wireplumber.service                      | pipewire.service.wants
xdg-user-dirs-update.service             | default.target.wants

Here is the output of the commands that were in "get ABBS":
First command there:

 [humst@hum ~]$ sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
[sudo] password for humst:
http://0x0.st/X3-E.txt

After successful installation:

 [humst@hum ~]$ ./abbs help
./abbs: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
./abbs: line 1: `<!doctype html>'

[humst@hum ~]$ abbs journal | abbs paste
bash: abbs: command not found
bash: abbs: command not found

Steam from pacman. There is no bad connection anywhere except Steam.

Re: Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

Which is why nobody uses it anymore. https://deepl.com

When I want to launch Windows or Linux, I put the required disk in and disconnect the second one, so I don't have dual boot.

No matter how much you juggle disks, it's still a dual-boot setup. The crucial part is all the hardware that's NOT your disk, specifically the NIC and the ACPI implementation in the BIOS and even your router.
Disable windows fast start, there's no way around that. Also dance the voodoo dance - the voodoo part is jest but the necessity at least anecdotal.

./abbs: line 1: `<!doctype html>'

That's not a shell script but some html page.

There is no bad connection anywhere except Steam.

It's likely either the http2 situation or slow steam servers.

I disabled Windows Fast Start. But nothing has changed. Figured out ABBS: curl downloaded the html file of the site itself, not the ABBS source code! So I copied from your post and everything worked!
Here is ABBS net speed:

[humst@hum ~ ] ./abbs net speed
/dev/null 100%[=================>] 100.00M 9.15MB/s in 12s.
2024-09-17 22:15:44 URL:
http://speedtest.frankfurt.linode.com/100MB-frankfurt.bin [104857600/104857600] -> “/dev/null” [1]

If it makes a difference, here's a screenshot from Steam:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/ … 3c1bb05dd&

My tariff is 100 Mbps, speedtest ookla shows 90 Mbps, but Windows downloads on Steam were 70 - 80 Mbps and the graph was flat, but here it's like a handsaw!

Thanks for the tip about the translator!!! I liked it!

Re: Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

Please avoid fully quoting previous posts, it's just bloating the thread.
linode looks reasonable and somewhat consistent w/ the other numbers - but steam is at 325kB/s and up to 1.5MB/s - have you tried to change the download server region?
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/v … -E88F-F3FF and make sure you're not throtteling it otherwise, https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/v … -406E-2F63

Other than that, we're back to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/ … load_speed
Steam seems hyper-sensitive to slow DNS, so if you're not behind a locally caching DNS (eg. in your SOHO router), consider using systemd-resolved or dnsmasq or stubby etc. ie. a local resolver cache.

Re: Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

I've changed the Steam download region, but not only do I have the game downloading slow, but also Steam launching. The startup time varies from 15 to 30 seconds. That said, on Windows it starts up between 5 and 10 seconds. The articles in your links didn't work either. And I already edited the steam_dev.cfg file, which I said above. About DNS I do not quite understand. I have installed dnsmasq , but what to do with it to somehow affect Steam?

Re: Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/ … load_speed contains more than just the http2 problem, notably the DNS and IPv6 comments.

About DNS I do not quite understand

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNS
Steam apparently makes plenty and uncached DNS queries - if those move through some slow DNS server (eg. provided by your ISP) it'll throttle the traffic.

Installing the package doesn't do anything:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dnsmasq#Installation
You'll have to start the service and make sure it gets used.

dig google.com # dig is in the bind package

Re: Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

Edited the /etc/dnsmasq.conf file
Here are its contents:

 listen-address=::1,127.0.0.1
interface=enp5s0
cache-size=200
conf-file=/usr/share/dnsmasq/trust-anchors.conf
dnssec

Then edited the /etc/resolvconf.conf file
Its contents are:

 name_servers="::1 127.0.0.1”
resolv_conf_options="trust-ad”
dnsmasq_conf=/etc/dnsmasq.conf

Gave commands:
1.

 dnsmasq --test

Answered: “... is OK”
2.

 dnsmasq --test

Answered: “... succesfully”

Checked if lib32-systemd lib32-libcurl-compat nss-mdns lib32-nss lib32-glu lib32-dbus packages are present.
They are.

Restarted dnsmasq:

sudo systemctl restart dnsmasq

And after these actions Steam gives error -150 (requires Internet connection) and stopped working Discord (also requires Internet connection)!

drill archlinux.org

And since you're using NM anyway, just enable resolved…

Finally! It solved my problem! Thank you very much!

But I don't know how to write [SOLVED] in the title.

Re: Very slow internet connection [SOLVED]

Mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

Assuming you've any control over the router DNS, reconfigure it away from whatever it uses right now to get better speed across the entire LAN.

Marked as [SOLVED]! And I already have the most wonderful speed, so no configuration required!
