Thinkpad T14 Gen 4 AMD, audio and wifi problems after boot

Hi!

I'm new to Arch and not a life long Linux guru so don't kill me if this is just some easy fix.

I've installed Arch with Gnome as a desktop and everything seems to work fine except for two things and these bug me a lot.

#1 On every boot, I login and wifi has question mark on top. Trying to ping any site gives nothing so there's no connection to the internet. Even tough NetworkManager says the wifi is connected, the connection is limited. Once I click on the network manually in Gnome or restart NetworkManager.service, the connection is made and everything seems to work fine.

#2 On every boot, the sound is muted. Gnome is reporting that it is not, the laptops LED is reporting that it's muted but once I press it, it unmutes the sound. If I change the output device, that unmutes the sound aswell.

Here are the systemd services running:

bluetooth.service | bluetooth.target.wants
dbus-org.bluez.service | system
dbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher.service | system
display-manager.service | system
docker.service | multi-user.target.wants
getty@tty1.service | getty.target.wants
gnome-keyring-daemon.socket | sockets.target.wants
NetworkManager.service | multi-user.target.wants
NetworkManager-wait-online.service | network-online.target.wants
p11-kit-server.socket | sockets.target.wants
pipewire-pulse.service | default.target.wants
pipewire-pulse.socket | sockets.target.wants
pipewire-session-manager.service | user
pipewire.socket | sockets.target.wants
remote-fs.target | multi-user.target.wants
systemd-userdbd.socket | sockets.target.wants
wireplumber.service | pipewire.service.wants
xdg-user-dirs-update.service | default.target.wants

I've tried to search the internet for any solution. So far I've found few bug reports on GDM setting the volume to default, tough I'm not sure it's my case. Thanks in advance for any help!

Please share the journal contents, that should show what's happening with NM. It should also show the alsa-store & alsa-state services, which may give some clues about your audio issue.

Re: Thinkpad T14 Gen 4 AMD, audio and wifi problems after boot

The full journal would be better, excerpts can miss important context.

For the audio see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=198137 and for NM check /etc/systemd/system/NetworkManager-wait-online.service.d/override.conf, that seems to have an error and should probably be removed (I don't think it will fix your problem though).

We should also check your enabled services:

ls -lR /etc/systemd/system

Re: Thinkpad T14 Gen 4 AMD, audio and wifi problems after boot

Please actually read the linked thread about ALSA, it explains the issue.

For NM delete /etc/systemd/system/NetworkManager.service.d/override.conf & /etc/systemd/system/NetworkManager-wait-online.service.d/override.conf and see if that fixes the wireless connection.

If it doesn't please post a full journal.

Re: Thinkpad T14 Gen 4 AMD, audio and wifi problems after boot

I did read it but no progress with it. All I could find was this regression bug report:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire … login-pane

My issue looks like the problem above. I did disable gdm, rebooted and speaker test worked well. After running gdm, the speakers we're muted. So looks like since 1.2, pipewire is not playing well with display managers.

Re: Thinkpad T14 Gen 4 AMD, audio and wifi problems after boot

So after today's updates to some gnome packages, the audio issue is gone. 1/2 solved!

Update:
Ok, so after another pipewire update it's back. Still, looks like the Pipewire bug is widespread.

Update:
So there's a commit fixing the Pipewire bug now. Update incoming...

Re: Thinkpad T14 Gen 4 AMD, audio and wifi problems after boot

The journal still has messages about the NM override files. Did you remember to remove them?

Once they're gone either reboot or run

# systemctl daemon-reload
# systemctl restart NetworkManager

Re: Thinkpad T14 Gen 4 AMD, audio and wifi problems after boot

I did remove it. I added just "!" myself after seeing the "Failed to set the requested Country regulatory setting" error. Anyways, removed it, same situation still.

So this is the NM general status after boot:

STATE CONNECTIVITY WIFI-HW WIFI WWAN-HW WWAN METERED
connected (site only) limited enabled enabled missing enabled no (guessed)

After something like 3-5 minutes, it connects automatically to wifi. If I point a network to connect to, it connects in few seconds and everything works flawlessly. After connection, this is the state reported:

STATE CONNECTIVITY WIFI-HW WIFI WWAN-HW WWAN METERED
connected full enabled enabled missing enabled no (guessed)

Dump NetworkManager then. It's useless bloat anyway.
