[SOLVED] X crashes multiple times per day

Hi

I have a Lenovo T495 with a "AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U w/ Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx" CPU and since about a month xorg is regularly (1-2 times/day) crashing.
I'm using GDM and GNOME. There is no other GPU in this laptop. I tried to collect as much information as possible and also tried a few thing to solve the problem.

When the "xf86-video-amdgpu" package is installed, the systems starts behaving strangely just before the crash. For example, in firefox it will not render the right click menu and it is impossible to interact with some windows. After half a minute, X (or gnome) will crash and GNOME shows the "Oh no! Something has gone wrong" error screen. I then have to reboot the machine in order to get it working again.
In this case the X.org logs contain:

The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 936 error_code 2 request_code 149 (unknown) minor_code 4)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.):

I also once observed this error when starting firefox from the terminal or when running xhost.

I found some posts suggesting to remove the "xf86-video-amdgpu" package. I did this: Xorg will still crash, but this time GNOME is able to restart.

This is the xorg log:

What I tried to debug the problem:

- run gnome without extensions: keeps crashing
- reset dconf, removed gtk and gnome folders (in .local, .config and .cache): keeps crashing
- uninstalled redshift-gtk: keeps crashing
- use kernel (and firmware) 6.11.1.arch1-1 from testing
- downgrade kernel (and firmware) to 6.10.5, this should be the version being used before the crashes started happening.

I don't have any xorg configuration files.

Finally, when the crash happens dmesg does not show any new messages, although I once observed the following message:

[Mon Sep 30 10:12:40 2024] traps: ThreadPoolSingl[4785] trap int3 ip:5a5b10a30875 sp:7a0f4f7fe630 error:0 in electron[56aa875,5a5b0c71e000+8f5b000]

Looking at all the logs, a lot of errors are logged, but unfortunately when searching online for these messages I never found an explanation or solution.
I hope you can help me solve this issue.

Re: [SOLVED] X crashes multiple times per day

gdm/gnome always send messages to the journal , (almost) never to xorg log .
Most (all ?) of those messages are only visible in the system journal.

Please run as root (or with root rights)

# journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

It will upload the system journal to 0x0.st and output a link when it's finished.
Post that link .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: [SOLVED] X crashes multiple times per day

X11 doesn't crash, there's a protocol error and gnome interprets that as call to commit suicide

From the context it looks related to some systray icon.

Re: [SOLVED] X crashes multiple times per day

Thank you both for your help. Last week I disabled the "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension and removed the libappindicator libraries from my system. Since then I experienced zero crashes, so you are right it's caused by a systray icon. I have another computer, with a "similar" installation of Arch, with similar apps using systray icons, on this system I didn't experience the crashes, so I'm not sure what exactly is causing the issue. Nevertheless, I no longer really use the systray icons anyway, so I'll continue without them. I guess it will be more stable, since it's not officially supported by gnome.
