I'm trying to play Doom 2016. Less than a minute after I load into a mission it'll freeze. Running steam in my command line showed that it said all this right before freezing, although I don't really know what to make of it.

I haven't been able to find anything about initializing plugins on steam. I haven't found anything on what "PluginPlayAnimationLoop" is, and I'm not sure why it's trying access a chainsaw animation, I don't even have the chainsaw in game yet.

I don't even have the chainsaw in game yet.

Regardless of why it's trying to access the animation, the file seems corrupted.
It might be possible that the game just tries to load all animations stumbles over this one, fails to finish the animation plugin initilization as consequence and then stalls when *any* animation is required (your first glory kill or whatever)
Because of the file corruption:
1. any idea how that might have happened?
2. if no, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SMART - check your disk health
3. tried to re-install the game to fix the missing file(s)?
Offline
No idea how the files could be messed up.
I had steam run a check of file integrity, it passed just fine. I re-installed the game, still has the same problem.
Disk passed a short SMART test, running a long one at the moment just in case. The drive's only about 2 years old and I haven't abused it I think, so it should be alright.

Seems a red herring.
What kind of environment is this? X11 or wayland?

Seems to be a hybrid graphics system?
Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
I assume you're running DOOM on the nvidia GPU?
Do you explicitly pass https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Vulkan … initialize to steam/the game?
Offline
Ah shit your right. That explains why OpenGL has been so slow. My CPU is trying to render the OpenGL graphics because the mesa drivers I'm using for my GPU are also for intel. I think that's a different problem but that's funny it was right in front of my face the entire time damn.

Yeah it should be running on my nvidia GPU.
I tried specifying my driver with the environment variables like that before, but it didn't change anything so I think it was already running the right one.

This might be the issue. I don't know why that would be failing.

You're running the system in regular prime fashion on the modesetting driver and since the output is wired to the IGP that's exactly what you want.
All is fine there, but for superturboturkeypuncher²⁰¹⁶, you want https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME# … _using_GPU
You can also try "prime-run %command%" , https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/nvidia-prime/ (it's just a bash script exporting some enviroment variables) and might want/have to also explicitly select the vulkan driver (if and when you install vulkan-intel, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Vulkan#Installation)
Check the ingame stats about the used renderer and report back on your success with that.
Offline
No success on nvidia-prime or those environment variables. It doesn't seem to change anything when I ran the game with them. In the game settings I set the renderer to Vulkan because OpenGL had terrible framerates.

Because opengl was the intel GPU. But the game should also tell you the actualy graphics chip it uses?
What if you prime-run the game on OpenGL? Better performance? Still freezes?
What kind of environment is this?
Ie. desktop environment, windowmanager, compositor?
Does the same happen in an uncomposited session (eg. openbox)?
Offline
Prime-running it on OpenGL works flawlessly. Problem is solved. I guess Vulkan is broken with DOOM or there's something else wrong with my vulkan installation.

Have you tried to, next to prime run, also explicitly "export VK_DRIVER_FILES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json"?

Thanks.

I did that with no success. I think it's something with DOOM rather than Vulkan.
