KDE plasma crash after nvidia update - Resolved

Hey everyone,


Since there was this issue with the nvidia drivers a couple of days ago, I've had repeated crashes of KDE plasma every time I use anything on the plasma shell, it works fine and does all the work it is suppose to, but as soon as it transfers to another program it just crashes and restarts it self  where it stays fine until I try to use it again.

I've done the nvidia_drm.fbdev=1 thing to get wayland to run again which it did but I've been since stuck with this issue.

I've also tried changing from nvidia to nvidia-open drivers and back, re-install plasma but nothing seems to help.

From the debug information it looks like there's still some problem with the nvidia driver.

I've tried looking around but this problem is not reported anywhere, unlike the nvidia bug one so I'm guessing it's a me problem but I can't figure out what hmm

Im using a AMD RX 6700 and getting the same plasmashell crash. 2 separate installs, one stock Arch the other EndeavourOs both having the same issue.

Also I tried a test install using a single gpu passthrough, and the same plasmashell crashes with a stock install.

I can duplicate the crash everytime when trying to use the Cube in plasmashell.

 Application: kwin_wayland (kwin_wayland), signal: Segmentation fault

I have also been having this issue, I am also using an nvidia card. From what ive seen, the crashing seems to be tied to the taskbar. Hovering over it for too long or trying to open the system tray will trigger a crash, and sometimes a series of crashes before things become stable again.

I ran 

journalctl -f | grep --line-buffered kde

to see what happens when it crashes. The output is below, although im not sure how helpful this is. I can also send crashlogs if needed.

I wonder what that keyboard KeyboardBrightnessControl, I've just tried disconnecting the keyboard but it still crashes, so it doesn't seem to be related with the keyboard per say.

The last two posts contain almst no meaningful information, ksplash crashed (the thing you see while plasma starts) but that could have all sorts of reasons.

So as far as I'm understanding it is crashing while trying to read a display events queue that is already destroyed?

Should I report this on KDE?

I've tried to disable nvidia_drm.fbdev=1 it now boots as usual but the issue with the crashing persists hmm

Edit: I've gone over the links provided but the issue looked a bit different? The reported symptoms we're quite different

That seems to have fixed it, interacting with the taskbar doesnt crash plasmashell anymore.

Strange, because a few days ago setting nvidia_drm.fbdev=1 was needed to get wayland to work at all with the new 6.11 kernel update, wonder what changed. Thank you, it seems to be fine now. smile

The framebuffer changes in 6.11 have caused multiple hiccups, amdgpu and esp. radeon seem to be affected as well roll

Why this causes plasma to crash, I can't say - perhaps a race condition on the vblank signal, but make sure that you're still running on nvidida and didn't switch over to software emulation on the simplydumb device ("qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation")

Update on my side, somehow plasma renderer was running with Vulkan, changing nvidia_drm.fbdev=0 did nothing, neither did Threaded option.

Changing the rendering engine to OpenGL seems to have fixed it.

I also set my rendering backend back to automatic before changing nvidia_drm.fbdev after reading the comments on your bug report. I had set it to Vulkan before because a game I was playing crashed the renderer itself somehow?? (I had a question mark icon in my system tray that opened the renderer settings when i clicked it) and forced it to use software rendering which was breaking things. Setting it to automatic must've fixed it then, as it looks like its using OpenGL in the support info. Now I know I shouldn't be messing with the renderer settings lol.
