Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello... again,

Came back here because the other place I was at wasn't doing anything for anyone except giving sarcastic remarks (Reddit). But I'm back after a bit of a hiatus from here. I hope to help out more like I did on Reddit.

I've been using Arch now for almost 5 years and I love it! I've also been using the Awesome WM since I started using Arch in February 2020. It's such a great Tiling Window Manager and I've sort of grew out of the Windows like Desktop Environments. It's really been a great experience for me these last few years.

Anyway, I'm back and hoping to help out in any way I can.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi,  I'm fairly new to Arch.  Started out years ago with Kubuntu but eventually wanted more.  So Manjaro was next.  Finally realizing it was time to learn more linux,  I went to Arch and started building!  Starting with Manjaro and now hard core with Archlinux,
I've already learned more about linux than many years running Ubuntu.  Just today I figured out how to get around the pacman7 and libpamac dependency errors...  thought my system might be fd this morning,  but now all is well!  Having Aur to deal with
makes things a lot more fun.  Also could never get shares to work under Ubuntu..  but Arch makes you create your own samba config files manually,  and you are forced to get it right!  Almost 35yrs using windows before I started my linux journey,  well actually
I started with dos,  before Windows 3.0 came out I could start using that.  With dxvk and vkd3d-proton installed,  Arch makes a great gaming OS too.  Sorry,  just really like this distro even if it makes me work for it sometimes!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey everyone, recently I decided to try out Arch. I've been using Ubuntu for a while but was feeling like messing with something a bit more DIY and maybe learn some more about Linux. I installed Arch on an encrypted flash drive just to play around. I read some helpful posts on this forum during the install and initial setup so I thought I should join to say hi.

Edit: I reinstalled following instructions from the Arch Wiki. It was a faster easier process than the video tutorial. I should have followed that to begin with.

Hello all! Been using Arch for a while, and now I've got a forum account =D.
Glad to be here, and though I may not be the most helpful in terms of knowing why everything likes to break, it's nice to finally be able to contribute to such a great community resource!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all!

I'm Fnordinger and used Pop!OS for the better part of 2 years. While I wasn't unhappy with my last setup I found it annoying to not fully know what software my laptop was using to do certain tasks. I was using i3 as a wm and whenever I wanted to use something which I knew existed on my system (like a program to use scanners or manage internet connections) I had to start by looking up what program was initially installed. Now with Arch almost everything that is installed on my machine was installed by me and I'm sure this will make it easier to handle problems in the future. The switch to Arch was also caused by Microsoft and their recent shennanigans with recall and advertisements in the file explorer. This lead me to wanting to change the operating system of my desktop PC at home as well (which is currently still running windows). So I figured if I have to setup a linux PC might as well set it up neatly once and then use the configuration for both PCs.

Looking forward to getting to know you all! big_smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Greetings, I go by Nephos. New user here, totally not a new Linux user.

Started off attempting to use Ubuntu and Fedora, but it wasn't really working for me. Being a Windows user then, I didn't really know much, and wasn't willing to place my bets on Linux yet, though I was thinking about it occasionally. 2022 was when I made the jump. Started off with Linux Mint 20.3 Una (the Cinnamon edition) alongside my already-existing Win10 setup. Long story short, I didn't even want to touch Windows ever again (although I like to use Windows 2000/XP/7 for some old software, through VMs or other machines, if not through WINE). I erased Windows and kept Mint after testing my important stuff. Then I went through Manjaro Xfce, Fedora 35 MATE-Compiz, Fedora 36 GNOME, Manjaro Xfce again, and then built my own computer where I installed Arch for the first time through simply following the installation guide on the wiki. Quite a switch, if I do say so myself! Was hopping between Artix and Devuan at some point (simply for the different init systems), and tried other distros like Alpine on a system I wanted to control strictly from the command line, and Gentoo (which was a hassle for my use case).

And now I'm here, not planning to hop, unless if I do it on a VM.
i use arch btw and stuff like that

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, everyone. I'm a new user but not new to the forum. I've been using Ubuntu for years and found many solutions in Arch forums. Recently, one of my friends, who knew I was frustrated with how Ubuntu operated, convinced me to switch to Arch. I'm glad to be here and to be part of the community.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, I'm Roger.

I started using Linux this summer after learning about Microsoft Recall. Having been fed up with Microsoft Windows products, especially since 10 onward, this was the straw that broke the camel's back. I spent a month using Linux Mint and getting comfortable with a non-Windows OS. I was missing the use case of HDR video watching, so through research I learned that Arch Linux would allow me to run the latest version of KDE plasma which had experimental HDR so I migrated to Arch after about a month of using Mint.

The trickiest things I've had to deal with is getting BTRFS snapshots working properly, and learning how to arch-chroot to fix grub and mkinitpcio when updates/snapshots go awry... I think I've got the hang of it now!

Glad to learn of the forum and hope to get and give answers as needed.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone. After many years of dabbling in mostly ubuntu and other debian based distros and working with ubuntu servers for work I have finally gotten around to installing Arch just to see what all the fuss is about. Seems to work alright so far, I even had working audio out of the box? Am i just lucky or is it just that its no longer 2009... Also why do i keep typing packman with a k?

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Read the description under newbie corner in the forum index page.

If that's not clear enough, look up "newbie" in Wikipedia or a dictionary or a search engine.

How did you find archlinux ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky
