SOLVED hibernate issues in 6.11

since upgrading to 6.11.1, i used to be able to hibernate, but cannot resume.
now i can't hibernate or suspend, nevermind resume.

i am on an hp envy desktop and while on linux 6.10 there was no issues with hibernate/resume at all.

this sort of thing also happened when i went from 6.9 to 6.10, and i even got to do some binary regression to find out which kernel was the last one to successfully hibernate thx to guidance from gromit.

to avoid these issues i tried linux-lts, linux-zen, linux-rt. hibernation/resume works fine in linux-rt and it no doubt will for linux-lts (haven't tried linux-zen), but i can't get my screen to show 1440p.

so i'm hoping 6.11.4 will have this issue resolved.

has anyone found any solutions?

Could you try if the next release candidate fixes it again?

sudo pacman -U https://pkgbuild.com/\~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/linux-mainline-6.12rc2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Re: SOLVED hibernate issues in 6.11

Hi Chris, thanks for dropping by. The colonel 6.12 does let me hibernate and quite nicely too. However, I'm experiencing the same inability to use 1440p on my monitor which is showing only 3/4 of the screen. I have another thread asking about that.

So thanks for getting the hibernation solved for now.

however, i'm going to switch to the lts kernel because i use hibernation a lot and having you come to my rescue each time it's broken is not practical. big_smile

EDIT 24-10-16:
having trouble with various kernels it became clear that i couldn't have both hibernation and 1440p. for instance, the 6.12 kernel gave me hibernation, but i couldn't get it to work for 1440p. linux-zen, and surprisingly linux-lts, gave me 1440p after some fiddling, but i couldn't get them to hiberate - even after ditching nvidia and going to nouveau. in any case, i removed all the kernels and went back to the standard - and suddenly i got both hibernation and 1440p!! i think upon closer reflection the problem was that i may have at some point installed nvidia for my hp envy instead of nvidia-open (and didn't know any better). so it really does pay to know better! wink

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

Re: SOLVED hibernate issues in 6.11

I'm not sure this is solved.

I was able to hibernate with 6.10 but after upgrading to 6.11 it no longer works.  System goes into a suspended state, black screen, but keyboard backlight is still on and the system never actually powers down. I have to power it off by holding the power button.

I tried 6.12rc3-1 and it tries to hibernate, but then wakes itself back up again after giving up and reporting that mt7925e was unable to power down the device.

Re: SOLVED hibernate issues in 6.11

hi reklis, i've removed the SOLVED.

i am on 6.11.3 and everything is working just fine. see my last post EDIT 24-10-16. my difficulty was an either or with hibernate and 1440p, but i think it was due to installing the wrong nvidia driver. i never experienced the suspended state, but on some kernels it wouldn't do a thing - the keyboard numlock light just winked at me and the system was immediately usable.

i'm surprised 6.12 didn't work for you, because it went into hibernation right away for me - and came out without a problem. i see you are on a laptop with an nvidia card, so it may be different. i know in a prior thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=297316
gromit said something about things can vary depending on the machine.

one of my other computers runs linux-rt and these upgrades haven't affected it (but then rt is still in 6.10).

what i found very surprising was that linux-lts didn't suspend - may be i had the wrong nvidia drivers when i tested.

take a look here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#Installation

and make sure you have the right nvidia driver. i'm pretty sure that was my problem.

@pradtf, to be clear: do you currently have any open issues (w/ 6.12)?

Re: SOLVED hibernate issues in 6.11

hi seth, i did in that i couldn't get 1440p to work with 6.12, though the hibernate did as i've posted. however, i'm back on track with 6.11.3, with both hibernate and 1440p now - and everything is working beautifully.

reklis doesn't seem to be as fortunate though.

i don't really understand why a kernel upgrade would cause hibernation issues. i don't know how a kernel is set up (except for a little experience many years ago with linux from scratch), though i would have thought that if an upgrade is done, they would leave the part that works alone ... but i guess it's much more complex than that and many things intertwine.

I switched from nvidia to nvidia-open and I can now hibernate again on 6.11.3  Thanks everyone!
