SOLVED 1440p not working

when i use linux 6.11.3 i get 1440p on my central monitor and access to my left and right ones too. i have an hp envy with directport, hdmi, dvi.

however, on linux-lts, linux-rt, linux-zen (which is 6.11.3!), i can't get 1440p and have lost access to my other monitors.

i'm using nvidia drivers and it all works perfectly on 6.11.3, but i can't understand why it won't on these others - surely they've supported 1440p for ages.

i've been consulting with gemini-ai and perplexity-ai, but have found nothing that works yet
including trying:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_RT="loglevel=3 quiet resume=/dev/nvme0n1p2 video=2560x1440"
in /etc/default/grub as per gemini which wants me to rebuild the kernel.

some other inspections show:

% lsmod | rg nvidia
i2c_nvidia_gpu 12288 0

% pacman -Qi nvidia

Re: SOLVED 1440p not working

All of the other kernels you listed need their respective kernel headers (e.g. linux-zen-headers,linux-rt-headers) installed as well as nvidia-dkms which you confirmed to not be installed. As the table under https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#Installation instructs you to.

Re: SOLVED 1440p not working

interesting. i didn't install it because i didn't read the wiki, but also it seems neither ai i was working with (gemini and perplexity) did either - but they did tell me to ask on the forum. big_smile

i tried it out for linux-zen:

sudo pacman -R nvidia-dkms
paru -S linux-zen linux-zen-headers
lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"
paru -S nvidia-open-dkms (nvidia-dkms for linux, but this one for all others)
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
sudo mkinitcpio -p linux-zen (probably not necessary)

and it works nicely!

i'm going to try it now on linux-rt and linux-lts.

thx as always v1del.

Re: SOLVED 1440p not working

I'd strongly encourage to not look at LLMs for Arch specific information (I'd strongly suggest you don't use them for anything where you not at least in parts know the answer yourself already)

Look at the wiki first, ask here, ask google, read chicken bones, sacrifice your first born ... then maybe ask LLMs.

They will absolutely give you wrong information, potentially actually harmful information and blindly following them will make repairs and fixes when you do end up asking here much more involved. They only thing they got going for them that they are always very nice and polite with the stupid shit information they make up.

Re: SOLVED 1440p not working

ya you're right v1del, imho.

gemini is somewhat amusing because it talks with great confidence on subjects it doesn't always know about. when i pushed it, i got it to admit that it was speculating.

perplexity pro is much better and does check things out, but can't always make proper evaluations. it can get deep into coming up with 'solutions' that actually take you away from solving the problem. still it has been a great help to me for working in programming languages such as elisp which i don't have experience with, but i've had to direct it to deal with incremental issues one at a time, otherwise it can get carried away.

anyway, thx again for pointing me to a solution that i can implement on the first 1440p monitor i've had. it's really nice!
