Re: [SOLVED] Firefox not opening at all

The **gtk3** theme is "breeze"?

Did you meanwhile test a different environment?

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox not opening at all

Forgive my ignorance, is there a difference between gtk theme and the theme I set in the KDE settings? Haven't yet had a chance to test another environment.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox not opening at all

When at the application theme setting in KDE, there's an additional "GNOME/GTK Theme" option, what is set there?

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox not opening at all

Also just try

killall firefox
ps aux | grep firefox
GTK_THEME=Adwaita firefox

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox not opening at all

Tested IceWM and the issue is the same. Strangely, on my main account it is only able to list 2 applications - Firefox and GIMP, whereas IceWM with the test account I made shows all the applications and FF works fine.

Checked GTK theme as advised by V1del and it was indeed set to Breeze, the other options are Default and Emacs, tested both and neither make a difference.

I tried to run the command advised by seth but that doesn't seem change anything.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox not opening at all

Meh.

killall firefox
strace -f -tt -o /tmp/firefox.strace firefox
cat /tmp/firefox.strace | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st # maybe check the filesize first, it's probably gonna be huge

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox not opening at all

OK that led me down the right path! Here is the output: http://0x0.st/XIjy.txt - you are correct that it's big! It crashes my browser tab half the time.

I noticed in the output a lot of mentions of files related to Bottles which I use to run World of Warcraft. It seems in the Bottles instance it has created symbolic links within the virtual Windows "User" folder back to my "Home" folder on Arch. I deleted the Bottle along with all the files and now Firefox is working again. Not sure how it all relates but I'm just glad to be making progress! Thank you everyone for all the help so far!

Not sure what to do going forward - creating a new Bottle does the same thing with the symlinks, but for now the issue has not returned. I will continue trying to re-create the issue if I can so we know for sure what caused it.

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

It's weird enough that FF reads some wine folders but if it cannot handle recursive symlinks that'd be an error to report (risking that the answer is "then don't create recursive symlinks")
There isn't much you could do otherwise about this.
It might be (since you recreated the recursive symlink?) that there's a limited depth or amount of recursion FF can handle.
You could pester your $HOME with some deeply nested recursive symlink ~/.config/foo/bar/1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/0 -> ~/.config and see whether that does something.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox not opening at all

Thanks, edited smile

I'm thinking the issue could have come from the fact I created my own symlink of the Bottles data folder in home so I could access it more easily. This time I've added it to the "Places" menu in Dolphin which suits me just fine smile

For now I have deleted the symlinks in the new Bottle and it hasn't recreated them yet, we'll see how it goes. If I have further issues perhaps I need to log it with the Bottles devs.
