[SOLVED] Crashes, kernel panics and other issues on HP Victus

Hello,

I have an HP Victus 16-d1033ns since September 2023 which only has had Ubuntu 22.04 and Arch (current distro). The issues I've had have happened on both distributions. Very occasionally, especially after long sessions, when I shtudown my laptop, the screen turns off but the laptop is still powered and its fans running. Once, by mistake, I put my laptop without confirming it was actually off and it stayed there for around an hour and a half and when I realised, the laptop was very hot (after turning it off and rebooting sensor displayed around 80º so I supposed it may have reached 100º for some time).

From that moment, also ocasionally, the laptop does a very weird crash, in which first the screen freezes, then the audio bugs, then the caps lock key starts blinking and, finally, my laptop hard reboots on its own. In this state, I can't REISUB.

The crashes 99% of the time have happened while using Genymotion, but today happened while running a game so I got a little concerned. The journal logs around the time of the crash are the following:

I have also ran memtests and all passed without issues. HP BIOS's built-in hardware diagnostics passed all tests too after a couple of iterations.

I do not know if this is the best place to ask and I apologize if it is out of place but if you have any tips on how to troubleshoot this, properly test if it is a hardware issue (and which specifically), or how to manage the situation in general, could you share them with me?

Also, is there any reason why the pc would not shut down completely sometimes?

Re: [SOLVED] Crashes, kernel panics and other issues on HP Victus

Does it go hot again?

I am not entirely sure of what you mean by going hot. If you are referring to the temperature of the device components they were stable (~40 degrees, before the crash happens and ~35 after it).

AMD GPU?

No, nvidia. I've had the crash happen when using both gpus (intel integrated + nvidia dedicated) and when using only nvidia.

Edit:
I am using the latest drivers:

Re: [SOLVED] Crashes, kernel panics and other issues on HP Victus

It does not seem to be working, my external monitors' screens are black when I set optimus-manager to run hybrid, I can only use built-in right now.

These are the steps I followed, I'm rather new here so I may have missed something:

- sudo pacman -S dkms
- sudo pacman -S linux*-headers (lts, zen and hardened, base ones were already installed)
- sudo pacman -S
- sudo pacman -Rdd nvidia-utils
- yay -S nvidia-535xx-utils

I noticed in the AUR page that the package has conflicts with nvidia and nvidia-dkms. Should I have removed them before installing too?

local/lib32-nvidia-utils 550.78-1
local/nvidia-535xx-utils 535.171.04-1
local/nvidia-dkms 550.78-1
local/nvidia-settings 550.78-1

You've nvidia-535xx-utils but the dkms and all other packages are (still) 550.78

yay -S nvidia-535xx-dkms

Or just

dkms remove nvidia/nvidia/550.78 --all
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/nvidia-535xx-utils.git
cd nvidia-535xx-utils
makepkg -i
dkms autoinstall # if the 535-dkms package installation didn't trigger that anyway

Perfect! Thank you as always seth!

I won't know in a while if this solved the crashes in my case. Should I mark as solved for now and change it in the future if the issue persists?

Re: [SOLVED] Crashes, kernel panics and other issues on HP Victus

I can confirm that I am still getting kernel panics. I didn't get any yesterday but today I got twice while using Genymotion. Will try to see if I get them in other apps and if it depends wether I am using hybrid or nvidia only. Is there anything else that I should share?

Re: [SOLVED] Crashes, kernel panics and other issues on HP Victus

If we can't pin the cause you'll have to employ https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump to catch the halting kernel.
Reboot into your normal session.
Run

lsmod > ~/lsmod.good

Start genymotion as you'd do usually

lsmod > ~/lsmod.bad
diff -u1 lsmod.good lsmod.bad

So it's unfortunately not loading any new modules we could blame sad
When you're running genymotion, do you typically attach an andoid USB device?

Re: [SOLVED] Crashes, kernel panics and other issues on HP Victus

No, the crashes happen with absolutely nothing plugged in my device. No external monitors, no bluetooth devices no usb, nothing. I will install and set up kdumpst and crash. Whenever this happens again I will try and provide the dump.

Unfortunately these crashes are very inconsistant and hard to reproduce. It's just launch Genymotion and pray. When it comes to other things like games or normal browsing I've had the crash happen, but it is extremely rare (highest frequency outside genymotion is once a day, assuming long sessions).

Is genymotion particularly RAM hungry?
Do you use
- zram
- zswap
- regular-ass swap?

Re: [SOLVED] Crashes, kernel panics and other issues on HP Victus

It is quite RAM hungry but it should not exceed reasonable numbers. It usually sits between 2.5 and 3.5 GB (my device has 16GB of memory). It does use a garbage collector dependant on a VM Heap size though, I don't know if it has to do with anything, but I have it set up to 256MB per application, perhaps it's too small for RAM hungry apps?

Pretty sure I use regular-ass swap as I didn't perform any complicated steps during arch install. I just made a 8GB partition and swapon on it.
