Migrating Arch-SSD to a new PC: Not booting

Hi,

I am upgrading my PC from an i5-750 to an i5-4560 and I thought I could just keep my SSD with the Arch installation and the HDD with /home as they are, put them into the new PC and it would work. However, the new PC only boots to a flashing cursor that jumps down by one line after ~2 seconds. This is where it stops.

The new PC can boot from the Arch install stick and this is what I was using to try out some things and collect the information for this post.

The Arch installation on the SSD was created when the Arch Wiki was more of a step by step how-to and not the "just become an expert at UEFI and GRUB and then do whatever you want LOL" it is today. So I couldn't find the specific instructions I followed many years ago, but it basically is a GPT partition table and a boot-partition with ID 128. It should be bootable in BIOS-Mode.

I have set the BIOS in the new PC to enable CSM and set the OS type to "Windows7/other" (the only other option was "Windows8").
I set the following CSM-Options to "Legacy only": "Boot option filter", "Launch Storage OpROM policy" and  "Launch Video OpROM policy".
I set "Other PCI device ROM priority" to "Legacy OpROM".

The new PC is a supermarket-PC with an OEM motherboard that does not have documentation and only has very limited options in the setup. I can provide more information about specific settings but I think the CSM stuff is all that is relevant here. I didn't see the possibility to enable BIOS boot mode there.

The SSD is recognized in the BIOS and shown by its full name and capacity, however, I can't select it when specifying the boot order. The HDD is available there (even though it isn't even bootable), but I selected the very generic option "Hard Disk" to try to make it boot from the Arch SSD.
When booting from the Arch-Stick, I can mount the SSD and work on it, so the disk is definitely working in the new PC.

I was adding these lines to /boot/grub/grub.cfg to print debug output:

set pager=1
set debug=all

But still, I only see a flashing cursor and nothing else. After putting the SSD back into my old PC, the screen was flooded with debug message. So I suspect, GRUB is not even being started in the new PC.

My suspicion is: CSM is not fully compatible with BIOS boot mode and I might have to change my Arch bootloader to UEFI?

I read in another forum thread that when migrating an SSD with Arch Linux on it, the following steps need to be performed in the new system after booting from the Arch-Stick:

grub-install --target=i386-pc /dev/sda
mkinitcpio -p linux
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

However, I didn't understand why this would be necessary. When being run on the finished installation through chroot, it would just regenerate and replace the artifacts by exactly what has been there before. As I'm desperate, I did it anyway but it changed nothing. Luckily, the SSD is still bootable fine when I put it back into the old PC.

The fstab seems to be fine as drives are referred to with their labels. The grub.cfg uses UUIDs to refer to the drives and these are also persistend and should not require any adaptations.

I have collected some more files and information to allow you to help me. It seems like this forum does not allow file attachments and also no collapsible fields, so I'm using the code tag. unfortunately, the dmesg output was captured after I removed the Arch-SSD because I forgot it. All of this information comes from the new PC after being booted from the Arch-Stick and chrooted into the SSD.

I feel reluctant to make changes to the existing Arch-Installation because booting has become rocket science since the times of BIOS and LILO and I fear that I might never get a booting system back if I break it in a way that it won't even start on the old PC anymore. Looking at the current Arch-Wiki, setting up the bootloader is most likely where performing a clean reinstall would end for me. I don't worry about the Arch installation itself as it's just a bunch of files that I can copy anywhere, but the boot loader is the great challenge for me. I would have no problem in repartitioning the SSD and copy the old Arch on it again if that would be required to make it bootable in the new PC.

I checked the boot mode on both the old and the new PC and /sys/firmware/efi does not exist in any case.

Any help wold be appreciated! Than you in advance!

Re: Migrating Arch-SSD to a new PC: Not booting

Chances are the main board does not actually recognise the disk in firmware so you can't boot from it, in which case your best bet is a firmware BIOS/UEFI update.

Another possibility - this strongly depends on your board - that it simply won't show legacy (BIOS) options for GPT formatted drives. In which case your best bet - and for general future proofing - would be to update the disk to an actual UEFI setup.

Re: Migrating Arch-SSD to a new PC: Not booting

I wager the EFI configuration of the new PC has no clue how to find the EFI partition on your drive.

Is the drive itself partitioned as an MBR (BIOS) or GPT (EFI) drive?
I assume the new system is EFI.?  Assuming so, try the following:

Can you boot your install media? If so, start from it, mount your root partition on /mnt, mount your EFI partition on /mnt/boot.  Do an arch-chroot /mnt into your installation, Check your /etc/mstab and verify the data it provides matches the data found in the output of lsblk -f,  Fix it if it does not.  Then configure grub with grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

Edit:  Snaked.

So you are saying that it is the SSD itself and not its contents that cause the BIOS to not boot from it? I was thinking this way because it offers me the HDD as a boot option even though there is nothing bootable on it. I also swapped the SATA connectors but again I only saw the HDD as a boot option despite the SSD being shown in the storage devices and being mountable after booting the Arch stick.

How can this be possible? Certain BIOSes just don't like certain disks to boot from? Is there any specification that I could look after? Imagine buying a new SSD just to figure out it works, just not for booting. The UEFI is already at its final version (from 2013). It's and Aldi-PC with an OEM motherboard that doesn't have any manufacturer support so that might be an explanation why strange things are possible here. Shouldn't happen with a "real" motherboard, though...

The drive itself has a GPT partition table with a BIOS boot partition. See details in OP. I set the new PC's BIOS to enable CSM so theoretically it should boot. Reading V1del's reply, I think the problem is more on the hardware side.

I will migrate the Arch installation to the SSD that was shipped together with the new computer because I know that one was booting (Windows 10). I will also use this opportunity to install an EFI boot setup on that other SSD. I will keep you updated with further problems or if that solved it.

Thank you for your help.

If your UEFI lacks early boot drivers to properly detect an SSD it might be because you're lacking a UEFI firmware update, seeing as it's a newer board than your old I find the second theory much more likely, that your UEFI implementation equates "legacy boot" with this MUST be an MBR formatted drive and will just not read the GPT partition table unless you opt for an actual EFI setup. Yes firmwares intentions and support here can vary wildly  and ultimately all these firmware developers will check for whether they can get a Windows to boot and if that mandates GPT on UEFI (and that's all anyone's ever going to use...) then that's going to be what they'll implement.
