Hi everyone - complete newb here, I am following a lot of tutorials for the basics and trying to set up i3 wtm. the video iḿ following uses gnome to switch between sessions but i am unable to find any equivalent on plasma.
I installed Arch but i didn´t choose gnome i chose plasma which when i log out shows i am running wayland. I only have one user, and no options to choose a new session in a different window manager. When i try to run i3 from command i get this error
ERROR: Another window manager is already running (WM_Sn is owned)
i installed xorg with default (all).
still same issue.
Any pointers, even if itś something i will have to study up to be able to understand, all welcome.
Apologies if i have broken any rules with this post - this is my first post.
P.S I only have one user set up on here, and despite being a super user i still have to sudo to get installations done, so i feel something is not right there anyway; neofetch below.

There's always a root user present, check the guide you used to install arch, it most likely guided you in creating another user with specific privileges (such as wheel group, etc). So there's two users on your system, a root user and the one you created, which requires sudo to run root commands.
Also not entirely sure on how to fix the original error, but a tip i'd give is to check out sway window manager if you'd like to stick to wayland instead of xorg. It works just like i3 and is made with wayland in mind.

Thanks for your reply...
I will install gnome and boot into that and just see if things work that way - i like plasma itś a very nice interface, but the whole point of installing Arch was to be forced into learning...
Hopefully I will be able to switch between gnome and plasma on boot if i want to use the easier option on lazy days.
Thanks again.
I will leave this open until i've tried and itś working...
Thanks again!

=> work yourself through https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide for a basic understanding of the system in front of you, not some random likeshareandsubscribe nonsense

sddm should let you choose sessions that have a .desktop file - is there an i3.desktop entry in /usr/share/xsessions?

ok - so i found the drop down menu and i3 is there, i did manage to select it but it just got me stuck on the login page for plasma wayland for some reason.
looks like i will have to do some research about how to configure for different login sessions/environments.
Iĺl do the research, iĺl leave this one open a while longer in case anyone wants to chime in, but will mark as resolved within 2 days.
many thanks.
