Updating linux kernel failed (/boot/vmlinuz-linux not written)

After having not updated the system for 8 months, I can not install the newest kernel. I've tried installing version 6.11.3,4,5 and all of them failed in the same way. Something has changed since the time when version linux-6.7.6 was up to date.

I updated linux-6.7.6 to 6.11.5.
The installation process at the beginning of the installation did remove /usr/lib/modules/6.7.6-arch1-2 and replace it with 6.11.5-arch1-1, but it didn't replace /boot/vmlinuz-linux with the new version. Because of this, the mkinitcpio process at the end of the installation thinks that it is installing version 6.7.6 and will fail because it can't find /usr/lib/modules/6.7.6-arch1-2.

There was no error/warning message about not being able to write /boot/vmlinuz-linux. Was the /boot/vmlinuz-linux file written somewhere else? I ask this, because my filesystem hierarchy is complicated. It is the result of mixing different devices (hdd and ssd) and also partitions/subvolumes from the early days of BtrFS when there was no best/common practices known for using this filesystem. I didn't have this problem in the past.

I did manage to install the new kernel by booting from a rescue partition and chrooting in to the main partition, but I would like to solve this problem for the next time I update the kernel.

as you're registered here for 20 years you should know your way around - and know this is an issue comming up over and over again - so, instead of re-starting the troubleshooting over and over again may I direct you to use the search function to find those various mentioned threads about this topic - the usual issues are mentioned several times
also the wiki has two pages about it
