[Solved] 4K 60Hz Display To 4K TV

My TV supports till 4K @120Hz.

Using a 1080p capable HDMI cable I can get 1920x1080 @60Hz on my TV display using HDMI-1.

Will my Intel® Core™ i5-3210M Processor  GPU Intel HD Graphics 4000 support 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz?

If yes then I what specific HDMI cable do I need to purchase to support 4K @ 60Hz?

If no then what minimum hardware do I need to invest in to get 4K @ 60 Hz?

I tried lots of cvt configs from other posts without realizing that my HDMI cable only supports upto 1080p ;-)

Going to be difficult on this HW... You'll at most get 1.4 compat which officially only supports 4k/30Hz but can be coerced to 60Hz with reduced color format. You minimally need a "high speed" cable.  But depending on what you want to do this HW will simply be too slow.

If you're going to buy, due to additional stipulations, you'll want a "premium high speed" cable, and then you can go with nearly whatever GPU new system that's reasonably recent... again depending, what is it you want to do/run at 4k/60Hz?

You will need a hdmi 2.0 or higher cable.

As said, your HW is ancient and I highly doubt you will be able to do 4k60 realtime youtube video decoding.
You probably need a new laptop (it's a laptop processor) to do that.

Not sure whether you can add a dedicated GPU to that at all.

The DisplayPort output should™ get you 2560x1600 at 60 Hz, but that's it.

That is so arbritrary. Just like they want people to buy the wrong cable so you need to buy another one.
bc of the same fuckin people my AMD GPU can't do more than 3440x1440@100Hz with HDMI (AMD didn't get clearance to open-source a "HDMI Ultra High Speed" driver, so we linux users are stuck w/ DP for those speeds)

You are absolutely on spot. I came up with the same conclusion with my finding and practically experiencing it.

I've been RnDing all this time and have come up with a solution that almost fits my need.

I tried in vain to acheive 4K@24Hz on Arch. Each time it threw up crt number error. I changed the crt number in applying xrandr resolution but for all crts it gave me the same error.

In desperation I researched whether it was possible on Bloatware and found Intel Community and Windows 10 posts where people achieved 4k@24Hz and so I tried.

Yes, (un)fortunately the lastest version of bloatware at the time of this post 24H2 with the latest Intel drivers does give me 4K@24Hz. Why? but why? Is it because Bloatware has better graphics drivers? Are Arch drivers not upto mark? I've never had so much emotional departure anguish. I could not dual boot and decided it wipe it clean.

My use case is limited to staring at the screen for extended periods of time (hours) on which there is limited motion. The higher resolution allows me to pack/squeeze max items so I can watch them all at once.

If I want to watch 4K@60fps videos I do it with the TV app; no need to extend it from my ancestral HW.

And regarding HDMI cable, for reasons unknown my 8 year old HDMI cable which officially supports only 1080p works fine with 4K@24Hz. Tech never got wierder.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh back to bloatware for now; till the time I cannot stretch my legs.

There's a huge difference between 4k@24Hz and 4k@60Hz - notably that HDMI1.4 is capable of one but not the other and you've not mentioned the 24Hz situation at all.

W/ the concerned HDMI output connected (shows up as disconnected in your xrandr output, maybe as consequence of attempting the impossible mode?) please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General and

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card0*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/edid-decode-git for the latter.

I could not generate modeline with cvt and cvt12 so I just decided to try the configs and the first one worked without any fuss surprisingly. I did not even try the remaining two

The ones I posted are cvt12 modelines (nb. "-b", not "-r"), I calculated them here.
