Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

You can use some tools to help you like downgrade (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/downgrade) or specify them all by hand:

sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gstreamer-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-plugins-base-libs-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-devtools-libs-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-python-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-editing-services-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-plugins-bad-libs-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-plugin-gtk-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-plugins-bad-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-plugins-base-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gst-plugins-good-1.24.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

(well, it may not be the same packages as you as that's what I've done for my computer)

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

i have now also installed 1.24.6 of the packages, i did not realize that i can also specify several packages when downgrading.

But since I don't know how to reproduce the error, I'll have to wait and see.

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

Downgrade doesn't seem to have helped, just quit “Smalland: Survive the Wilds” and changed a tab in Librewolf and I was back in the login screen.

That was about 19:28/29

maybe it's a problem with gamemode, if i remember correctly i always used that when the error occurred.

in the “/etc/enviroment” I have the following

GAMEMODERUNEXEC="env DRI_PRIME=1002:7480!”

and this is the gamemode config

; use desiredgov for games.
igpu_power_threshold=0.3

; GameMode can change the scheduler policy to SCHED_ISO on kernels which support it (currently
; not supported by upstream kernels). Can be set to "auto", "on" or "off". "auto" will enable

; To use this feature, the user must be added to the gamemode group (and then rebooted):
; sudo usermod -aG gamemode $(whoami)

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

Did you have that issue the day before yesterday? (When you installed arch)

If you did not, can you put the output of

cat /var/log/pacman.log | grep upgraded

starting from the time you got the error? Maybe an upgrade messed something up?

To be fair, I'm not sure what could be your issue, @Seth is for sure more knowledgeable than me on this...

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

I tried a little bit, I use a chrome webapp for roll20 and this then via the graphics card because roll20 needs a lot of performance.

There I get the following error:

DRI_PRIME=1002:7480! /usr/bin/chromium --profile-directory=Default --app-id=ipfddmalmlnlpghlhcipmhnghmfhopmj

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

That's just chromium poking around to inhibit your screensaver - did you reboot after downgrading gstreamer (or at least restart the gnome session) and
1. do you still have gstreamer downgraded
2. did you experience another crash after #28 ?

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

Yes, I restarted after the downgrade and that was before the logout of #28

1. yes

pacman -Q gstreamer
gstreamer 1.24.6-1

2. Yes, it just crashed when I opened steam. https://0x0.st/XyUi.txt
since the crash, the multitouch no longer works and the scaling on the internal monitor can no longer be changed. I'll restart, hopefully it will work again.

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

Does this mean I want to set the MUTTER_DEBUG_KMS_THREAD_TYPE variable?

What does it do? Unfortunately, I couldn't find much about this.

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

Yes.
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/- … te_2089373
Mutter attempts realtime behavior but w/ the kernel rt feature that means it gets killed everytime the kms thread stalls for 200ms which seems to frequently happend for
1. mode changes
2. fullscreen window changes (likely related to unredirection?)
3. driver bugs
4. the system is busy w/ other stuff

W/ your steam pattern I guess 1 or 2 will apply (does the game run at a different resolution?)

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

I actually play all the games on the resolution of the main monitor, which is different from the one built into the laptop.

And the variable then does what? Because user doesn't sound like the query is no longer performed in real time.

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

What query? Do you understand what a real time thread is?
I've no idea what the variable does specifically but highly suspect that this idiocy gets bypassed and either there's no kms thread or the kms thread runs as a regular-ass thread that won't get killed everytime it stalls for whatever reason.

Realtime scheduling implies that as long as the thread doesn't return, the wheels won't spin and no other process gets any CPU time, which is why there's a hard limit and when the process cannot meet that, it just gets nuked out of existence.
There're of course use cases for this kind of thing but your desktop session/display server that will then implicitly take down all GUI clients everytime it brain-farts too long is most certainly not.

There's some upstream discussion on whether this is an amdgpu specific issue (ie. whether amdgpu is prone to stall too much, halting the kms thread too long) but that ignores that the entire thing, that used to be EXPERIMENTAL BULLSHIT last year is bat-fucking-shit crazy unless the display server could also survive the RT thread and keep all clients alive or actively maintains the RT limits (which is typically done, you deliver watever you could get in the guaranteed time) - which is obviously not the case here. wE JuSt aCtIvAtE ThE ReAlTiMe tHaT MaKeS It gO WeEeHhH

Disable this nonsense.
I cannot believe these knuckleheads made that the default behavior, that's like selling cars with an autodestruct everytime you cross the speed limit roll

sorry it was just me using the wrong terminology

seth wrote:

I was just wondering if that would be so bad? xD

In any case, thank you very much for your help.

Because I have read in the other posts that the experimental settings should be switched off.
Is fractional scaling that unstable? I think a 125% display on my notebook would be a great thing, but I haven't dared to activate it yet because of the problem.

I am now updating gstreamer again, I don't think it was the fault.

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

Fractional scaling isn't prone to get the process systematically crashed - you might get visual glitches or lousy perfomance out of it but then you disable it.

Edit: I assume the newer gstreamer version caused some (probably minor) delay that broke the back of Monapp's camel
@Monapp, disable the RT thread and update gstreamer again: still an issue?

---
You're supposed to drive at the speed limit, you're not a robot, you'll flicker around it and then there's an explosion mid traffic every 10s.
I'm pretty sure that's a plain stupid idea.
You could have devices that are hooked up w/ the speed-o-meter and automatically transfer a fine you cross the limit.
Drastic punishment, but not inherently wreaking havoc with massive collateral damage.

Like you could hand the compositor higher scheduling priority for more RT-a-like performance in an entirely not-for-RT-designed process…

Can you start librewolf w/ MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 ?
Is this some AUR pacakge or a flatschappsnapdock container?

Today I had it again, but I only had the browser and the terminal open.

The amdgpu seems to have gotten in the way this time?

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

So at about 14:43 the display froze in the (what is it called when you press the super button once?) then I could neither move the mouse nor did it accept buttons. Then it threw me to the login screen, there I logged in and then I had a freeze again, but this time only on the second monitor, on the first one there was also this (super menu) but I could open the terminal there and restart the notebook.

At the time, I only had Element, Zen Browser and the terminal open. Nextcloud and Flameshot are running in the background.

I made the following updates shortly before and then also restarted.

The GPU resets and gnome-shell crashes in mesa.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Debuginfod

Though the triggering process is zen-bin the "zen browser" and this looks very much like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=299776

Im hintergrund läuft permanent noch Nextcloud und Flameshot.

Aha. tongue

Re: user session crashes and I end up at the login screen

FYI the Zen Browser is a customized version of Firefox. And the linked article sounds familiar. Then I'll try out the parameters.
And sorry, I write my texts in German first and then translate them, I must have overlooked a part.
