Pacman commands returning error code with no log output

I'm trying to get an update notifier working, and it requires an error code of 0 for "pacman -Qu". Mine is returning an error code of 1. The log, however, is not capturing an error.

Anyone know how I can determine what the error is?

There is no error. Non-zero exis status of "-Qu" means that there is nothing to update.

Also you don't want to operate on pacmans database directly if this is really intended to be just a notifier, just use checkupdates from pacman-contrib instead.
