Re: Constant Input/Output Error

Ok, what are the recent coredumps after stellaris crashed?

Also https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/ … #Stellaris - but the crash isn't right away, is it?
In the past you had to play for minutes/hours?

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

The most recent one in the list is from yesterday actually, seems like everything gets wiped after the crash...

And yes - it goes like this - the game launches perfectly and runs until it crashes from after some action like selecting fleets or something. Right now - it crashes right after the first action I take in game, but also - as I've mentioned, sometimes I could play for even hours - although it happened only 2 times when I was capping CPU clocks. And after the crash the whole system just breaks and becomes unresponsive - other apps shut down and avery command returns "Input/Output Error".

BREAKING
I've managed to make system unresponsive by adjusting the scale in kscreen: https://0x0.st/XRor.txt
This stuff repeats on and on at the end:

Nov 26 21:30:31 HereticPC kwin_wayland[907]: kwin_scene_opengl: 0x502: GL_INVALID_OPERATION error generated.
Nov 26 21:30:31 HereticPC kwin_wayland[907]: This plugin does not support setting window masks

Nov 26 21:30:31 HereticPC kwin_wayland[907]: This plugin does not support setting window masks

Also, looks suspiciously familiar - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=295937

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

kwin_wayland generates a lot of invalid ops.

qdbus6 org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation

Also have you ever reproduced the stellaris crash on X11, preferably an uncomposited session (like openbox)?

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

Ok, after the last post I've tried to cap clocks again and run Stellaris - and it worked again and ran for a few hours! After the crash thou, my system got rekt - first I've started having problems with Wayland KDE sessions - they would crash at the start in ~3/4 cases (X started OK though, but it was crashing while trying to play Stellaris - even when capping CPU), but after rebooting qiute a few times this is what I now get while trying to boot with LTS (took a picture with a phone and extracted the text):

Default kernel also fails the same way. As well as using fallback initramfs. Fsck-ing lv_home - and everything else - doesn't help - it doesn't even show any problems with it!

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

Boot the install iso, see whether you can mount the partitions into place under /mnt (do NOT chroot) and run

sudo LC_ALL=C pacman --root=/mnt -Qkk | grep -v ', 0 altered files' | grep -v backup > /tmp/howbadisit.txt
cat /tmp/howbadisit.txt | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

after rebooting qiute a few times

Involved the power button? Or sysrq+REISUB every time?

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

When system would boot and then crash - only SysRq, but if the boot itself fails - like in the situation described above - no other choice but restart button.
So howbadisit file is here -
http://0x0.st/XRej.csv
And btw, there were warnings during txt file creation (again, extracted text from a photo)

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

The integrity check looks harmless, did you maybe fail to properly install the kernel into the boot partition?
Can you arch-chroot into the installed system?
Do you have vmlinuz-linux-lts in the /boot mountpoint (ie. before mounting the boot partition there) and the boot partition itself?
Check

file -s /boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts

for all that are there and compare them to "pacman -Q linux-lts" (theory being that you're booting an older kernel - the fallback initramfs might also still work)

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

There is nothing in the /boot before I mount my boot partition there. After mounting the boot partition there are vmlinuz entries for linux and linux-lts - both are 9f the same versions as their respective packages

Tried to reinstall kernels, nvidia drivers and mkinitcpio within chroot - got I/O error while reinstalling nvidia-utils:

call to execv failed (Input/output error)

And even after exiting from chroot I'vo got this after trying to fsck:

32 root@archiso ^ # fsck /dev/Array/lv_home
fsck from util-linux 2.40.2
[ 1554.315738] Buffer I/0 error on dev dm-1, logical block 479989744, async page read

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SMART
Is that again an OCR?
You can pipe output straigth into 0x0.st "echo foo | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st" - otherwise please link the pictures, OCR is the worst variant.

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

OCR? I did SMART self-checks recently - everything was fine, can do it again right now, but I doubt anything will change. Oh yeah, and I did a very stupid thing) I brome my nvidia packeges when their reinstall crashed due to IO error, reinstalling them would give me "exists in filesystem" - so I removed them... Now packman -S --overwrite doesn't even help. Looks like it's gonna need another reinstall(

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_c … ecognition

I did SMART self-checks recently - everything was fine

smartctl -a /dev/nvme…

when their reinstall crashed due to IO error, reinstalling them would give me "exists in filesystem"

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p2210994 doesn't suggest anything like that.

The errors in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p2210904 are not caused by a broken nvidia driver installation - several partitions cannot be mounted, in part becasuse the devices don#t even show up.
This is a hardware or kernel (installation) issue.

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

SMART checks: http://0x0.st/XRfg.txt and http://0x0.st/XRfE.txt - everything looks fine, the most recent selftests were run a few minutes ago

And nvidia driver problem was caused recently by my stupidity, so yeah, it's not the cause of the original problem, but it probably abd enough that I'd need to reinstall the system

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

Probably not.

The smart data indeed doesn't look critical.
From the chroot (don't forget to mount the /boot partition and) re-install the kernel, pay attention to any errors.
Also post

lsblk -f
cat /mnt/etc/fstab

*BEFORE* the chroot (lsblk won't work after the chroot)

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

Here are fstab and lsblk in one file - http://0x0.st/XROX.txt

UPD
Fixed nvidia packages but when I try to run mkinitcpio, it doesn't see modules from nvidia-dkms, and when I try to reinstall that package, I run into IO error

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

Try to comment the two ntfs entries in your fstab resp. set them to "ntfs3"
We'll then see whether there're any other fatal issues and if you end up being able to boot the system "somehow", we can at least inspect it live.
Because of your pot. nvidia issues, try adding "nomodeset systemd.unit=multi-user.target" to the kernel parameters if it otherwise gets you into a unusable GUI.

If that remains, also comment the /boot entry -you might have lost nvme0n1

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

Commenting ntfs fstab entries didn't do anything, boot partition seems to be fine:

root@archiso ~ # fsck /dev/nvme1n1p2
fsck from util-linux 2.40.2
e2fsck 1 .47.1 (20-May-2024)
/dev/nvme1n1p2: clean, 388/65536 files, 100331/262144 blocks

As for nvidia - it's more like a problem with nvidia dkms modules - mkinitcpio doesn't see them, and if I try tobreinstall nvidia-dkms - pacman triggers post-hook that executes mkinitcpio - and throws I/O error in the process, and locks pacman db

See whether commenting every fstab entry but for the root partition (/) allows you to boot the multi-user.target and log in (as root), so we can maybe get the journal from that boot to see where the issues start.

Did so and now system "boots" into black screen with an empty cursor, so I've decided to switch off sddm completely and remove nomodeset parameter for now ... with the same result...

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

Disable plymouth, remove any "quiet" parameter, add "ignore_loglevel boot_delay=35"
Setup your phone on a tripod (if you don't have a tripod, you can makeshift one by wedging it between two books -\_ ) and point it at the monitor.
Record the boot process and upload the video (the boot_delay=35 should limit message updates to 30fps - but also slow down the boot a lot)

Re: Constant Input/Output Error

There's a stall and then a truckload of nvme0 IO errors - did you put the disfunctional disk back in??
Does it maybe become part of the dm raid? (Cause afterwards, you're getting IO errors from dm-0)
