Crash app with GPU acceleration

Hello everyone. I have a Thinkpad X270 with an Intel 620, I use Awesome. When using applications with GPU acceleration, I occasionally see crashes in some apps. Something goes wrong, after which all applications with acceleration freeze with a black screen: Chrome, Telegram, Alacritty. At the same time, the system continues to work. I have to open htop and manually stop the Alacritty copies and Telegram. Chrome restores its work itself after a while.

I have installed mesa and xf86-video-intel. But vainfo return this

[gena@gena-pc ~]$ vainfo
Trying display: wayland
Trying display: x11
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

But I don't understand clearly what I can do with this situation. Thanks to all for any help

Re: Crash app with GPU acceleration

Your processor is Kaby Lake and was launched in 2016 .

That generation should not need xf86-video-intel , please remove it and verify if that helps.

Also please post the output of pacman -Qs intel .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: Crash app with GPU acceleration

In addition you'll need intel-media-driver for VAAPI, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hardwa … tion#Intel
But that's not relevant for alacritty (only GL) - for the immediate problem follow the lone wolf.

I have delete xf86-video-intel and install intel-media-driver. Now I have around 100% CPU loading all time and freezing sometimes.

[gena@gena-pc ~]$ pacman -Qs intel
local/intel-gmmlib 22.5.4-1
    Intel Graphics Memory Management Library
local/intel-media-driver 24.4.3-1
Intel Media Driver for VAAPI — Broadwell+ iGPUs
local/libva-utils 2.22.0-1
Intel VA-API Media Applications and Scripts for libva
local/libvpl 2.13.0-1
    Intel Video Processing Library

Re: Crash app with GPU acceleration

Now I have around 100% CPU loading

By what process? Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hardwa … ing_VA-API - but you should™ not have to export anything here.
What's the output of "vainfo" now?

I have 100% CPU loading about 2-3 minutes and after that its normally. But sometimes I have small freeze. For example when printing by keyboard.

Re: Crash app with GPU acceleration

And my vdpauinfo

You don't want and typically don't have to use vdpau.
VAAPI looks ok.

Remove every xf86-video-* package, but the server log looks ok.

I have 100% CPU loading about 2-3 minutes and

Yes, but in what process? Check top or htop.

For example when printing by keyboard.

You mean when activating the print dialog?
Depends on what client that is and what it does at the time, but expensive™ tasks take more resources than simple ones.
This might also hinge on scanning for printers, disk IO, having to start cups etc. et pp.
Are you suggesting those dialogs started faster or w/o such "freeze" when using xf86-video-intel?

Re: Crash app with GPU acceleration

htop screenshot

I think that I get freezing and not normally cpu loading every time when the information on the screen changes. After all apps has been loaded, I have a 5-10% of cpu loading. But, for example, when I send a message in Telegram - I have not normally CPU loading and part of window with message repaint slowly

I have xf86-video-vesa package

[gena@gena-pc ~]$ pacman -Ss xf86-video-vesa
extra/xf86-video-vesa 2.6.0-2 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed]
    X.org vesa video driver

Should I delete it?

With xf86-video-intel everything was rendered without any speed issues. Only crash sometimes.

Re: Crash app with GPU acceleration

Please don't bump, edit your previous post to mend it if nobody has yet replied.

Also don't post pictures of text, post the text - but the main CPU consumers are htop and esp. chrome - what's not unreasonable.

Should I delete it?

Yes, all of them.

With xf86-video-intel everything was rendered without any speed issues.

Does it help to run a compositor (picom, xcompmgr) to mitigate whatever you're expeiencing there?
