EDIT: Okey so the idea struck through a little bit
To join the groupchat you need a jabber client i like this one:
pacman -S psi
and then start it with the simple command:
psi
Also if you want the svn version of psi it's availible here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=0&SeB=nd
Pidgin is also a working jabber client.
We are using: archlinux@conferance.jabber.org from what I can tell.
ORIGINAL FROM HERE:
Well I was recently tipped out about jabber and i started loving it at first sight
Now I'm wondering if Arch has it's own jabber groupchat room, if so what's the adress?
If not would it be possible to get one?
For 2 reasons, first: instant help and chitchat, second: spread jabber to more people
So what do you say is this a good idea?

If it doesn't exist already (I don't know of any such group) then go for it - you don't need our blessing, although I expect you'll get it eventually.
Obviously, there is the IRC channel for AL help/chitchat which seems to be fairly popular already.

It was discussed briefly once, but I don't think it ever happened. (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3686) In the words of a very wise man:

The group is pretty dead... Must think of a way to get people joining!

I'm down, I've been looking for a reason to actually use my jabber account. I set one up a few years ago 'cause it sounded like a great thing but then was never really able to use it. Lets hope I can remember my login info. Thanks

people will probably start to notice here. Have someone mention it on the mailing list and in Arch IRC too. I suspect you'll have plenty of visitors in not too much time.

jabber.org is slow and laggy.
we tried archlinux@chat.amessage.info
it's much faster and no lags was seen.

I didn't have any lags or noticing it was slow in .org.
I think i read pretty recently that the amessage servers doesn't support many functions, but i can't seem to find the link right now.

Oh yeah, amessage is *much* better. I vote for this one instead of jabber.org!

The lags are not constant, but we noticed them most of time, and they were different for each communication party.

Which functions they don't(didn't) support?
They use MUC protocol (which is newer than groupchat), dunno about other features.
They also have gateways, but I didn't use them.

Noob guide on how to connect?
It depends on your jabber client.
In Gajim: Action-> Group Chat -> Join New Group Chat,
then enter archlinux@conference.jabber.org or archlinux@chat.amessage.info,
add it to bookmarks then.

In gaim it is: Tools -> Room list -> Get list -> Enter: chat.amessage.info -> find room named archlinux
You can add it to your buddy list by clicking add chat.
