fbcon console only works if one external monitor connected to laptop

Hi!

I've been using my Lenovo T430 with Arch Linux for many years now and always used the console to login in and later start XFCE.
I am also using a docking station with multiple monitors connected. Only since recently though, this setup stopped working for me.

The console shows up fine when running the laptop out of the dock or if only one external monitor is connected to the dock. However, if two or three external monitors are connected to the dock, I only see the output of GRUB and then nothing. I can login blindly and start XFCE though, and then have normal graphical output. Also, in the faulty situation, when I then disconnect the second external monitor, the console also shows up even though it did not in the beginning.

I tried downgrading the kernel, downgrading systemd and experimented with some settings of "video=" on the kernel command line. Unfortunately, nothing solved the issue so far.

The closest I got is: I can see a small difference in the kernel log when using one or two screens connected to the dock.
One line is only present in the failing setup (two screens):

 graphics fbcon: hash matches

Below find the kernel logs (one screen, two screens) with timestamps removed for convencience (easier to diff).

Does anyone have a clue on what could be wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: fbcon console only works if one external monitor connected to laptop

I found one more interesting thing:
If I add "video=HDMI-A-2:e" to the kernel command line via /etc/default/grub and start the laptop outside the dock, wait it to boot up and then put it into the docking station, HDMI-A-2 shows the console.
Without that kernel command line argument, this does not work.

However, this still does not solve the problem, sadly.

No ideas, anyone?
