xfdesktop 4.20 appears to have destroyed the desktop as a folder. i.e. no icons, and restricted menu (removes open in new window, etc.)
Downgrading to 4.18 (only xfdesktop - I left the rest of xfce4 @ 4.20) fixes it.
This is on two separate, and very different machines.
Icons for minimised applications work, just not fieltype/launcher icons.
Any idea?

Since I’m still on 4.18, I can’t confirm or test yet.
xfce 4.20 release notes clearly show a desktop with normal desktop icons, so I assume (and hope!) it’s not a removal of the feature. The changes tour and the changelog don’t mention it either.
Since the ability to use a different desktop stile was present in xfdesktop for a long time, first see if that setting didn’t get reset for some reason. Settings → Desktop → Icons, the “Icon type” choice. If that’s not it, see if XDG user directories are not misconfigured.
Finally, note that 4.18 is still the version Arch offers. 4.20 is only in testing repos: it may be misbehaving e.g. due to incompatibilities with something.
Sometimes I seem a bit harsh — don’t get offended too easily!

I've been using testing since forever, and rarely have any problems. the user directories are all good. You can see the problems here (approximately the same screen area, with both 4.18 and 4.20)
Note the lack of icons and the change in the menu. It's as if the desktop folder no longer forms a part of the desktop (I can navigate to the desktop folder in the file manager and everything is there)
Nothing I've read suggests that there's been a change, and I can't see any flags in the PKGBUILD that would cause this.

It'S apparently a build flag, https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/ … fa07bf7053 ?
File a bug, maybe it has been accidentally triggered on the building host?

Damn - I tried - can't remember my login and no new logins being created (I assume you mean at gitlab.archlinux.com), so no can do (trying to recover password is no help, it doesn't know who I am - I do wish there was a single login across all sections). Any chance someone could do it for me?

You pray to the gods and the gods shall deliver
But this is a very sceptical god.
Please briefly move your config away or try w/ a new user account to make sure it's not (also) a changed config key before I file a bug on your behalf ('cause this god would check)

libyaml is a build dependency now for desktop icons. https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/ … ec2dc094eb

Same symptoms on two separate machines (with different architectures), so it's highly unlikely to be a config issue.

Is a non-sequitur, but I trust https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p2215323 enough:

Your runtime installation doesn't mattter.
It has to be present on the building host.

Fixed in xfdesktop v4.20.0-3
Sorry that I missed this new build dependency the first time.

Thank you. Confirmed all working properly again. I'll mark as solved.

Icons are back, but wallpaper isn't working properly: I see my wallpaper only on the first desktop workspace, and the default blue mouse wallpaper on all others.
xfdesktop-4.18.1 did not have this.
Edit: reported as https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … -/issues/2

I could reproduce the issue but I was able to solve it by simply unchecking and rechecking the "apply to all workspaces" checkbox at the bottom of the desktop / wallpaper settings.
Doesn't seem like a packaging issue.

Most likely the related parameter that does not survive the migration from 4.18 to 4.20 for some reason. But again, disabling and re-enabling it seems enough to permanently fix the issue.

Hello, I was having this issue with latest version of xfdesktop (4.20.0-7), and the fix was to delete the content of the folder ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/
